When to travel to Obertauern
Obertauern is a popular ski resort located in the surroundings of Salzburg. The resort is famous for its fabulous winter landscapes, interesting trails and vast areas available for freeride. Of course, Obertauern is ready to offer a lot of opportunities for snowboarders, cross-country skiers, and toboggan enthusiasts.
After some research, I decided to put together information I have previously found out and create a complete guide on how to organize a holiday in Obertauern. I figured out how to get to the town, where to stay & what to do there. I really hope this detailed information will help you plan your trip to Obertauern.
Obertauern can be visited all-year-round. The skiing period lasts from December to March incl. The hiking period lasts from May to October incl. In winter Obertauern trails have solid snow cover which suits best for skiing and freeriding. In spring and summer Obertauern may boast blossoming and picturesque natural landscapes which suit best for sightseeing, hiking, rock climbing and other seasonal activities. Autumn is a beautiful and colorful season of the year as well. In autumn cable cars continue to operate so tourists can observe the best mountain views.
How to get to Obertauern
Where do you fly into to get to Obertauern? Most often, tourists get to Obertauern from Salzburg or Munich; both cities have airports to fly into. Check the current flight timetable from your city at Aviasales booking service. I usually use Aviasales when planning my trips, because it can compare a great variety of available flight options. Then you can get to Obertauern by public transport, by taxi or by rented car.
How to get to Obertauern from Salzburg
After analyzing a lot of information, I can conclude that the nearest large city with an international arrival airport is Salzburg. The distance from Salzburg to Obertauern is almost 100 km. You can get from one point to another by public transport, by taxi or by rented car.
By public transport: As for public transport, you need to combine a train + a bus. Since Obertauern does not have a train station, the nearest town with a train station is Radstadt. Trains from Salzburg run in this direction regularly. You can check the train schedule and purchase tickets online at the Raileurope booking service. Next, you need to travel from Radstadt to Obertauern by regular bus, which is about 20 km. You should take the bus # 280.
By taxi: It is clear that for those traveling with their own ski equipment, or with a lot of luggage, the option of public transport is unlikely to be suitable. Therefore, tourists often order a car transfer that takes them directly from the airport to the hotel door. The travel time in this case is a little over an hour. You can book a transfer car in advance via various online services; in that case a driver will already be waiting for you at the time of your arrival. Kiwitaxi and other similar transfer services run along the route. I read and analyzed a lot of reviews about Kiwitaxi and most of them are positive, so I can recommend this online transfer service. For sure, there are a lot of other taxi services available at the airport.
By rented car: Such an option as renting a car is also suitable. To rent a car you need to have a passport, an international driver’s license and a bank card. It is better to book the required class of car in advance, because this will save your time on the spot. You can book a car via specialized international services such as Discover Cars, Economybookings and others. Salzburg and Obertauern are connected with highway No. A10. The distance is 100 km; the travel time is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes (see on the map).
How to get to Obertauern from Munich
It takes longer to get from Munich to Obertauern than from Salzburg; the distance is about 220 km. However, Munich Airport is considered to be more convenient because a larger number of direct flights from all over the world arrive here, which is why this airport is highly popular among skiers.
By public transport: If we talk about public transport, then you can get from Munich to Obertauern using a train + bus combination. Firstly, you need to take a direct train to the town of Radstadt at the Main Train Station in Munich. Direct trains run several times a day – at 10.17, 14.17, 16.17, etc. You can also take a connecting train from Munich to Radstadt via Bischofshofen, such trains run more frequently. The travel time is about 3 hours 20 minutes. You can check the train schedule and purchase tickets online at the Raileurope booking service. I regularly check out the available train options via Raileurope and I can say it has definitely convenient search with a lot of useful settings which helps narrow down the results as you may need. The next step is to travel from Radstadt to Obertauern by regular bus, which is about 20 km. You should take the bus # 280.
By taxi: You can also use a taxi or car transfer services. The travel time from Munich Airport to Obertauern usually takes approximately 2 hours 40 minutes in total. You can order a transfer car via Kiwitaxi, Intui.Travel and other services. In this case, the driver with a name plate will be waiting for you upon arrival. The transfer can also carry a large amount of luggage or ski equipment. You can also try to find a taxi car upon arrival at the arrival terminal. I tried both variants and as a rule when booking online in advance I have more options available.
By rented car: You can also get to Obertauern by rented car, but you need to have an international driver’s license. In addition, you need to have a passport and a bank card (cash payment at the rental offices is not accepted). There are many offices of international rental companies at the Munich Airport. You can also book a car in advance via specialized international services such as Discover Cars, Economybookings and other similar ones. Based on my experience, both services are good. They have a convenient search and a lot of helpful filters. The distance from Munich to Obertauern is 220 km. Highways No. A8 and A10 run between the city and the resort. The travel time takes approximately 2,5 hours (see on the map).

Take a note! When going on a trip to Austria, do not forget to take out travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerging medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.
