When to travel to Stubai
Stubai is one of the most famous ski resorts in Austria and the most extensive, located on a glacier. The ski season here lasts longer than anywhere else in Austria – from November to June. Add to this the developed infrastructure, a huge freeride area, several snow parks, other activities such as toboggan runs, cross-country skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, etc. and you get the perfect resort for a winter holiday.
After some research, I decided to put together information I have previously found out and create a complete guide on how to organize a holiday in Stubai. I figured out how to get to the town, where to stay & what to do there. I really hope this detailed information will help you plan your trip to Stubai.
Stubai is available for tourists any season of the year. The skiing period lasts from November until June. The period from June to October you may use for hiking, rock climbing and other summer activities. The cable cars run all-year-round so you can easily use them to climb the mountains for enjoying views and exploring hiking trails in summer and for skiing in winter. The choice is up to you.
How to get to Stubai
Where do you fly into to get to Stubai? The nearest major cities with international airports are Innsbruck, Salzburg and Munich. You can check the current flight timetable from your city at Aviasales booking service. I usually use Aviasales when planning my trips, because it can compare a great variety of available flight options. Then from those cities you can get to Stubai by public transport, by taxi or by rented car.
How to get to Stubai from Innsbruck
After some map examining, I discovered that Stubai is located just 30 km from Innsbruck, so getting to the resort is not difficult. You can use either public transport or taxi service or rented car.
By public transport: To use public transport, you need to travel from Innsbruck Airport to the Main Train station. Here you can catch regular buses on the Regio Stubai Line. In winter, buses run quite often – 3-4 times per hour throughout the day. The first bus departs at 6.48, the last at 19.00. The travel time is from half an hour to an hour, depending on what village in Stubai Valley you have chosen to stay in.
By taxi: If you arrive with a lot of luggage or travel with small kids, then a taxi option will be very useful. You can find a taxi car upon arrival at the airport; you can also order a taxi transfer in advance. The travel time from Innsbruck Airport to the Stubai Valley takes approximately half an hour to the village of Neustift and about an hour to the village of Mutterbergalm. You can book a taxi in advance via online services like Kiwitaxi and others. I can totally recommend Kiwitaxi as it has a decent search and a reliable car park. I examined a great number of reviews and most of them are of positive experience.
By rented car: Another suitable option is renting a car. To rent a car you need to have a passport, an international driver’s license and a bank card. You can book a car in advance on specialized international services such as Discover Cars, Economybookings and other similar ones, and pick it up at Innsbruck airport. Based on my experience, both services are good and I can definitely recommend them. Innsbruck and the Stubai Valley are connected with motorways # A13 and # B183. The travel time is about half an hour (see on the map).

What to do in Stubai
The Stubai Glacier offers skiing almost all year round. The ski season here lasts until June. Guests are offered 43 km of trails, of which 19 km are blue, 15 km are red, 4 km are black. The longest route of 10 km is also located here. About 20 km of the glacier’s area belongs to freeride. The resort is served with 25+ more ski lifts. The Moreboards Stubai Zoo snow park is also located in Stubai Valley.
The Schlick 2000 ski center with 15 ski slopes, the operating snow park called Stubaipark Schlick 2000, toboggan runs, hiking and snowshoeing trails is located nearby. In the Serlesbahnen ski area in Mieders you can find 6 slopes, toboggan runs and hiking trails. The Elferlifte ski area in Neustift has an additional 3 slopes, toboggan runs, a cross-country ski track and hiking trails.
In addition, Stubai is equipped for night skiing and for forested and panoramic trails. More than 80 km of marked hiking trails, as well as all possibilities for cross-country skiing are available for the guests of the resort. You also can try such activities as paragliding, sleighing, and snowshoeing.
Since there are several ski areas located in the Stubai Valley, you can either ski in one chosen separate area or purchase a pass for all available ski slopes at the resort. In the second case, you can purchase a united ski pass called Ski Plus City Pass Stubai Innsbruck. As I found out this ski pass includes skiing on 13 slopes, including Stubaier Gletscher, Axamer Lizum, Skizentrum Schlick 2000, Kühtai, Hochötz, Muttereralm, Bergeralm, Nordkette, Serlesbahnen, Elferbahnen, Patscherkofel, Rangger Köpfl and Glungezer.
In the evening, you can enjoy your time in numerous restaurants serving regional cuisine, as well as cafes and bars. The highlight of the resort is the Stubai Water Park. The area of the complex occupies about 5000 sq. m. Here you can try different types of entertainment such as an adult 25-meter pool, a children’s pool, a water channel, a jacuzzi, water slides, a playground, a football court, a Finnish sauna, a steam bath, a herbal sauna, Kneipp baths, cold water pools, therapeutic showers, a salt room, a relaxation garden and much more. I found out detailed information for visiting the Water Park:
- The entrance ticket to the pool area starts from 11,50 euros for adults and from 7,70 euros for children, depending on the length of stay;
- A full day ticket for an adult costs 22,70 euros;
- Tickets to the sauna area start from 29,90 euros for adults and 23,50 euros for children;
- A full-day ticket costs about 33,10 euros;
- The pool area is open daily from 10.00 to 21.00;
- The sauna area is open daily from 10.00 to 22.00;
- The restaurant on site is open from 11.00 to 20.00.
As I see it, holidays in Stubai are very diverse. During the day you can ski on a glacier, in the evening you can visit a water park or go to one of the gourmet restaurants where you can taste regional cuisine from Tyrol. Snow parks, toboggan runs, numerous hiking routes, snowshoeing – all this will make your stay at the resort as varied as possible.
Take a note! When going on a trip to Austria, do not forget to take out travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerging medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.
