When to travel to Anzio
Anzio is an excellent choice for those who are tired of the “hustle and bustle” of Rome and decide to go to the sea for a day or two. Located just 60 km from Rome, Anzio is a small but very cozy beach resort. And when we talk about a full-fledged beach holiday, this is not an exaggeration, because the Anzio shoreline stretches for as much as 12 km! At the same time, the beaches of Anzio have fine golden sand, a gentle entrance to the water, and the water itself is crystal clear.
After some research, I decided to put together information I have previously found out and create a complete guide on how to organize a holiday in Anzio. I figured out how to get to the town, where to stay & what to do there. I really hope this detailed information will help you plan your trip to Anzio.
As I found out, the swimming season lasts until mid-October here, because the Tyrrhenian Sea is considered to be one of the warmest. The main proof of popularity for Anzio is the fact that the residents of Rome prefer the resort as a vacation spot by the sea.
How to get to Anzio
Where do you fly into to get to Anzio? You can get to Anzio from Rome. Closest international airport is located exactly in Rome, where flights land from all over the world. There are both direct and connecting flights to Rome. The current flight timetable can be checked via specialized online services such as Aviasales and others. I often use this online service as it helps me a lot to compare different flight options and choose the optimal one.
How to get to Anzio from Rome
By public transport: You can easily get to Anzio from Rome either by public transport or by car. Electric trains run between these points throughout the day. You can check the current train timetable and purchase tickets in advance at the Raileurope booking service. I can totally recommend Raileurope as I often use it when planning my own trips and, in my opinion, it has a very reliable and convenient search. The travel time is just under an hour. Electric trains depart every hour from Roma Termini station and arrive at Marechiaro station. Then you should walk to the historical center of Anzio by foot.
By rented car: By car you should stick to highway No. SR148. The distance is 62 km. The travel time is 1 hour (see on the map). Since in Anzio the only entertainment consists of beaches and local cafes/restaurants/bars, you can also go by car to neighboring towns for excursion purposes. Car rental in Rome is a very popular option and in demand among travelers all year round. You can rent a car at various offices in Rome, as well as at Rome Fiumicino Airport. Cars can be booked in advance via various online services such as Discover Cars, Economybookings, etc. Based on my experience, both online services are good. I would recommend comparing them to find out the best available variants.
Where to stay in Anzio
Anzio is considered to be a weekend resort, i.e. most often people come here for a beach holiday for several days, for instance, for a weekend, so the majority of accommodation options are bed and breakfast hotels, ideal for a stay of 1-2 days. In addition, in Anzio you can rent an apartment or stay in a holiday home (designed for a longer stay). There are also several classic 3- and 4-star hotels in the town; accommodation in such hotels is quite affordable. This is explained by the fact that along the shore, besides Anzio, there are several other large beach resorts.
When choosing a hotel in Anzio, you should pay attention to its location, as all local hotels are divided into town and beach hotels. If the main purpose of your stay is a beach holiday, then it makes sense to look for a hotel located close to the sea. For example, accommodation options in Anzio that are close to the beach include:
Anzio a picco sul Mare: these apartments are located near the sea. The kitchenette is equipped with a refrigerator, a microwave and a toaster. There is also a sun terrace, a beautiful garden and barbecue facilities. The apartments have sea views from their windows. Wi-Fi is free. Free private parking is available on site;
B&B Villa Evelina: the hotel is located near the sea and is surrounded by a garden. A swimming pool and bar are available. Guests can stay in rooms of various categories. Wi-Fi is available in the hotel rooms and are free of charge. Free public parking is available nearby. Luggage storage services can be found at the front desk;
Serpa Hotel 3*: the hotel is located on the seashore, within a short distance to local beaches. There is a bar at the hotel. Guests can stay in double rooms. Some rooms have a balcony overlooking the sea. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and is free of charge. Free private parking can be found on site. The front desk is open 24 hours a day and provides luggage storage services;
Il Paradiso sul Mare 3*: the hotel is located in a picturesque place and has panoramic views of the sea. Guests can stay in rooms of various categories. As online booking services provide tourists reviews, I found out that depending on the room type, breakfast may be included in the price or paid additionally. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and is free of charge. Free private parking can be found on site;
Casa Vacanze Elianto 3*: the hotel is located on the shore. It is in a historical building. Guests can stay in studios or apartments. Some rooms have partial or full sea views. Wi-Fi is available in public areas and is free of charge. Free private parking is provided nearby. Luggage storage can be found at the front desk.
What to see in Anzio
Anzio is an ancient town. Its history has lasted for more than one millennium, and that is why in the old part of the town you can find quite a lot of archaeological sites and ruins of ancient Roman buildings. AS I discovered, the most notable sites are the ruins of the Roman Amphitheater and the Archaeological Park.
The promenade along the shore is also pleasant. Walking here, you can see many interesting villas, although you can only view them from the outside. In this sense, Villa Nero, Villa Pine, and Villa Adele stand out for their facades. In the western part, the promenade ends with a steep cape, from where beautiful sea views open up, especially at sunset. There are walking paths on the cape and benches for rest.
Also, on the shores of Anzio, the old port has been preserved, which colorfully completes the shoreline of the resort. You can find a lot of restaurants, cafes, and bars here. There are quite a lot of them here, although the town, in general, cannot be called noisy.
In the surroundings of Anzio there are also such interesting places as the Tor Caldara nature reserve, the resorts of Nettuno, Sabaudia, Terracina and others. In my point of view, it is more convenient to visit all these places with a rented car, because there is no railway connection between those towns. One of the main attractions of Anzio is still a beachline; more about the beaches of Anzio you can find below.
The beaches of Anzio stretch for a record 12 kilometers along the sea, while the local beaches are sandy, with a gentle entrance to the sea, which is generally rare for the Italian shore. The beaches of Anzio are clean, well-groomed, equipped with everything necessary. If you wish, you can even go surfing and do other water sports.
The sea in these places is considered to be warm. Anzio is washed by the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The swimming season lasts from mid-May to mid-October. At the same time, in Anzio, unlike neighboring resorts, there are no chain hotels; the town remains provincial, quiet and calm. Residents of Rome choose Anzio as a beach holiday destination, preferring to avoid the hustle and bustle of the more “promoted” tourist resorts on the shore. I would definitely recommend taking Anzio into consideration when choosing the sea resort near Rome.
Take a note! When going on a trip to Italy, do not forget to take out travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerging medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.
