Terracina is one of the most popular seaside resorts near Rome. It is located about 100 km from Rome on the Riviera de Ulisse. The resort is administratively divided into two areas – the Old and New Town. If the Old part is dominated by historical sights and monuments, then the New part has beaches, hotels, restaurants and all kinds of entertainment.

Terracina is also famous for its promenade with the best views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The town is an extremely popular resort due to its well-developed infrastructure and excellent natural conditions for relaxing. You can come here for one or a couple of days to take a break from the bustle of Rome, or stay longer and immerse yourself in a full-fledged beach holiday. The “high season” lasts from June to October here. There are different ways of how to get to Terracina, so let’s explore them.

According to my research, the resort has a developed hotel and apartment infrastructure, including a variety of accommodations. For instance, you can stay in Terracina in hotels of various star ratings, B&Bs, apartments, and even in holiday homes.

As I discovered, the pricing policy is quite moderate compared to the sea resorts in other regions. However, I would recommend booking accommodation in advance, since the resort is popular not only among foreigners, but also among Italians.

In Terracina you can find hotels of almost any star rating, from fashionable to rather modest with a basic set of functions. When searching for a hotel, I would advise paying attention to the location, beach line, access to Wi-Fi and the availability of organized parking (if traveling by car). Some hotels compensate for the distance from the beaches by having an outdoor seasonal pool.

Terracina Apartments

Apartments in Terracina are no less popular. The convenience of apartments in comparison with hotels is that they have equipped kitchens or dining areas. If necessary, you can find both studio apartments and full apartments with one or more bedrooms.

As I figured out, the cost of renting an apartment directly depends on the capacity. It is also worth noting that most of the apartments for rent in Terracina are located in the center of the old town or nearby, so the way to the sea can take some time.

Popular apartments in Terracina include:

Casa Conte is located 10-15 minutes’ walk from the beach. There is free private parking and free Wi-Fi. Breakfast is also included. This apartment has 1 bedroom.

What to see in Terracina

Terracina is divided into the Old and New Town. Most tourists stay in the new part of the town because of it is located close to the sea. Then they visit the old town to see the famous historical sights of Terracina.

After some research, I found out that the Old and New Town are divided by the so-called Appian Way. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The old district is considered to be the historical center. Its main square is Piazza Municipio, where the attractions are concentrated. It is definitely worth visiting Piazza Municipio for excursion purposes, since unique ancient Roman and medieval buildings have been preserved here.

Historical Attractions

At the entrance to the Old Town, you will be greeted by the Porta Napolitana. It is some sort of ancient gates. After passing through them, continue along the famous Appian Way. This is the best way to see all the main monuments of Terracina.

In the central square you will be able to see such significant attractions as, for example, the Emilian Forum, preserved in a fairly decent condition, given its age. You will also see the Cathedral of San Cesare, which attracts attention not only with its external decoration, but also with its interiors including mosaics, gilded statues and marble sculptures.

Near the cathedral there is another top Terracina attraction called the Venditti Castle. Then you will see the Bishop’s Palace and the Rose Tower. These buildings date back to the Middle Ages. Their architecture is quite expressive. Gothic features can easily be found in the decorative elements. By the way, the Rose Tower offers a picturesque view of the Old Town. To my mind, it is one of the best observation decks in Terracina.

I would also recommend visiting the closest surroundings of the town, where natural hills are located. The place is remarkable not only for its observing opportunities, but also for the ancient building preserved here called the Temple of Jupiter. The sanctuary was built between the 2th and 1st centuries BC.

Now the temple looks more like preserved ruins, although, the place remains atmospheric in its own way. Do not reject the idea of walking along the ancient streets of Terracina and climbing the hill of Jupiter. As I see it, such a walk will gift you many impressions and delightful emotions.

Terracina Beaches

Of course, one of the main attractions of the resort is considered to be the local beaches. In this part of the shore the beaches are sandy. The Tyrrhenian Sea usually warms up faster than in other part of Tuscany or neighbouring Liguria.

Sandy beaches in Terracina stretch in both directions for more than 15 kilometers. The sand here is fine and the entrance to the water is gentle. In my point of view, it is an ideal combination for a holiday with children. The swimming season in Terracina lasts from mid-May to the end of September.

Another feature of the beaches of Terracina is their equipment. In addition to standard services, such as sun loungers and umbrellas, you can find a lot of entertainment here, including cafes, open-air bars and night discos. The sport centers that provide equipment for various water sports and entertainment are also available.

In conclusion

In general, I can say that a holiday in Terracina combines a quality beach relaxation and interesting excursion possibilities. It is not surprising that the resort is chosen as a popular holiday destination not only by foreigners, but also by residents. It is quite easy reachable from Rome. There are different ways of how to get to Terracina.

It is also believed that Terracina has fresh air, which is explained by the presence of coniferous groves and gardens in the closest surroundings of the town. Walks in the park area in Terracina are always full of impressions and positive vibes.
