When to travel to Schladming
Schladming is one of the oldest and most famous ski resorts in Austria. The mountains here are relatively low and wooded, but the snow cover lies until mid-April, due to the fact that most of the routes run along the northern slopes. The resort infrastructure is also developed at the highest level. You can find high-quality trails, an extensive entertainment program, convenient transport connection – all this makes Schladming a desirable holiday destination.
After some research, I decided to put together information I have previously found out and create a complete guide on how to organize a holiday in Schladming. I figured out how to get to the town, where to stay & what to see. I really hope this detailed information will help you plan your trip to Schladming.
As I found out, Schladming can be visited all year round, depending on what kind of sport you prefer. The skiing period lasts from November until mid.-April. The hiking period lasts from May to October incl. During the winter time you can try skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, cross-country skiing, sleigh rides, ice skating and much more. During the summer time you can try sightseeing, hiking, tennis, golf, horseback riding, rock climbing, etc. So, the choice is up to you.

What to do in Schladming
Schladming is a popular winter resort in Austria. Here you can find a developed ski infrastructure. A long season (from November to April inclusive), a lot of entertainment and active leisure activities, convenient transport connection – all this makes Schladming an attractive place for a winter holiday. By the way, in summer there is the opportunity to ski on a glacier. After some research, I discovered the following practical information:
- The length of the slopes in the home ski area of Schladming is 123 km;
- the length of the slopes shared with the neighboring resort of Dachstein is 232 km;
- The home ski area is served with 44 ski lifts; shared area with Dachstein is served with 98 ski lifts;
- There is a track for night skiing.
Please note that most of the routes pass through wooded areas and the mountains here are not very high. However, this does not affect the quality of the slopes anyway; they are equipped with extremely high-quality cover. There are also all levels of skiing difficulty, including blue, red and black slopes. The cost of ski passes varies depending on the season (high, low), as well as on the number of days.
Year-round skiing is available on the Dachstein Glacier. There is not much space devoted to freeride – about 18 km. There are 3 fan parks on the resort, including Atomic SuperPark Dachstein, Atomic SuperPark Planai and Snow Valley Planneralm. Halfpipes and border crosses are also available. A total of almost 500 km of trails are usually ready for cross-country skiing.
In the evening, you can go to Apres-ski Dom, where several restaurants, cafes, food courts and discos are located under one roof. Other entertainment options include an ice-skating rink, sleigh and horse riding, bowling, and numerous hotel spa centers. Spa centers, by the way, are equipped to the maximum. You can often find swimming pools (indoor and outdoor), fitness centers, saunas, steam baths, hydromassages, massage rooms, relaxation areas and much more. Hotel spa centers are open not only to the hotel guests, but also to everyone for a fee. I visited some thermal spas in Europe and I can definitely recommend such a nice activity to try.

Erlebnisbad Schladming is a famous sports complex at the resort. The complex has indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a gym, a sauna area, a solarium and massage rooms. In the outdoor area you can find, in addition to the swimming pool, a water slide, a tennis court, volleyball and football courts, a children’s playground, umbrellas and sun loungers. In the rooftop area, in addition to the pool, there are water slides, fountains, waterfalls and much more. I did some research to collect practical information for visiting and here it is:
- The complex is open from 09.00 to 20.00 daily;
- The entrance fee is 18 euros for an adult and 10,20 euros for a child for the whole day (in the indoor area);
- The entrance fee is 9,60 euros for an adult and 6,60 euros for a child for the whole day (in the outdoor area);
- Sauna services are paid separately;
- There are other types of tickets, including tickets for 1,5 hours, for 3 hours, for 4 hours, family tickets, etc.
You can also find spas and thermal baths in Schladming in the following places:
- Hotel Schutterhof
- Hotel Falkensteiner Hotel Schladming
- Hotel Hoflehner
- Sporthotel Royer
- Aparthotel Alpine Club by Diamond Resorts
As I see it, Schladming has quite a lot of entertainment activities, and coupled with high-quality pistes and multi-level skiing, the resort can be considered one of a kind. In the summer, Schladming also offers glacier skiing, many hiking trails, options for rock climbing, mountain biking, horse riding and other activities. The lifts operate daily during the summer.

Take a note! When going on a trip to Austria, do not forget to take out travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerging medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.

I’ve been wanting to ski in Austria for some time now! I probably won’t get there for this ski season but hopefully the next! Do you happen to know if there are many toll roads along the way? I plan on renting a car for my trip. Thanks in advance!

So many amazing things to do, and it looks just as beautiful in summer as it does in winter. Which one do you prefer?
