What to see in Rovereto

Rovereto has preserved a beautiful historical town center, where you can see buildings of different times from the early Middle Ages to the Renaissance. For example, one of the central buildings is considered to be the Alberti Poya Palace. Nowadays, behind its walls there is the MART Museum – the Museum of Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto.

The palace was built in the 18th century and is notable for the frescoes, stucco moldings and paintings that have been preserved here. The museum exhibits works by Italian artists from different periods. In the museum collection you can see works by Francesco Hayes, Eugenio Prati, Bartolomeo Bezzi, Umberto Maggioli, Gino Rossi and others. There is some useful information for visiting that I discovered:

  • The museum is open to the public daily from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm; on Friday it is open until 9 pm; Monday is day off;
  • The entrance ticket costs 15 euros.

Historical Attractions

There are many other palazzos (palaces) in the town. This is the Annona Palace (now the library) and the Fedrigotti Palazzo, the Dell’Istruzione Palazzo (now the university building) and the Del BENE Palace, the Rosmini “al Frassem” Palace and the Ex Scuole Damiano Chiesa Palace, the Frizzi Brunatti Palazzo and Palazzo Sichardt, Palazzo de Cobelli and some others.

All of them are concentrated in the historical center of Rovereto and are excellent for walking routes. The buildings look more like mansions with beautiful balconies and elegant facades. Meanwhile, these are architectural objects of various periods, from the Middle Ages to the 18-19 centuries.

Rovereto Castle

Having escaped the narrow streets of the historic center of Rovereto, you will finally reach the graceful Church of San Marco, the Historical Museum and, most importantly, the Rovereto Castle. Rovereto Castle is a real fortress, located on a hill and protected by moats. The construction of the castle dates back to the late Middle Ages, so you can admire its fortifications, characteristic only for medieval times.

The fortress is decorated with towers, and there are tunnels inside down. Now the castle functions as a Museum of Weapons. You can see an impressive collection of weapons from different times typical only for Italy. After some research, I discovered the following practical information:

  • The museum is open from May to October, from 10 am to 5:30 pm;
  • The entrance ticket costs 10 euros; you can take an audio guide in your language.

Other Castles

You can also find a lot of castles around Rovereto. In this sense, Rovereto is a completely unique town, and if you are interested in medieval architecture, then Rovereto offers great routes for strolling around. For example, in the surroundings of Rovereto there are the episcopal castles of Corno, Castellano and Noarna. The castles have been partially preserved and are only accessible for external viewing. These magnificent buildings once belonged to the heads of the Episcopal Diocese of Trento and protected the medieval roads from raids on Rovereto.

The largest castles in the surroundings of Rovereto that are open for viewing are Arco Castle, located 25 km from the town; and Beseno Castle, located 11 km from the town. I found out detailed information for visiting the castles:

Where to go from Rovereto

It’s no secret that Rovereto, along with Trento and Bolzano, is an excellent starting point for traveling around the mountainous part of Italy. That is why many tourists, staying in Rovereto, make radial trips around the surrounding area in search of beautiful mountain landscapes. In winter, tourists depart from the town to numerous ski resorts located nearby.

  • The Hoffentol waterfalls are located 11 km from Rovereto;
  • Lake Loppio is located 15 km from Rovereto;
  • The Albaredo stone pyramid is located 8 km from the town.

From more distant places, these are, of course, the resorts of Val Gardena (120 km), Val di Fassa (125 km) and Madonna di Campiglio (105 km). You can also get to the hidden gems of the Dolomites such as lakes Carezza and Braies, as well as the breath-taking mountain range called Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

Natural Attractions

The closest, 108 km from Rovereto, is the turquoise mountain Lake Carezza. You can get here by car along motorway No. A22/E45 (the travel time is approximately 1.5 hours) or by public transport, taking a train to Bolzano and then taking a bus No. 180 directly to Lake Carezza. The total travel time is a little over 2 hours (see on the map).

Getting to Lake Braies is a little more difficult. First, you need to make several train changes to reach the Niederdorf – Prags station, from where buses No. 442 go directly to the lake. The total travel time from Rovereto, including changes, is about 4 hours one way. If you travel by car, then follow the same motorway No. A22/E45. The travel time is 2.5 hours (see on the map).

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo mountain range can only be reached by car. To do this, follow the same route #A22/E45. The distance from Rovereto is 205 km, and the travel time is just over three hours (see on the map). Here, nearby, is the famous picturesque resort of Cortina D’Ampezzo, which is also definitely worth a visit, in my opinion. If you choose a car as a way of how to get to Rovereto, it will be easy for you to travel around the whole region.
