When to travel to Cervinia
Cervinia is a ski resort located in Northern Italy, on the very border with Switzerland. Cervinia is very popular among skiers due to its natural conditions and is unanimously recognized as one of the best ski resorts in Italy. The border with Switzerland is so close that the region of Cervinia combines with the Swiss region of Zermatt into a single ski area, which provides almost unlimited skiing opportunities.
Cervinia is immediately surrounded by four mountains. They are 4000 m high. The most-known one is a mountain called Monte Cervino. The ski season in Cervinia lasts longer than in other ski resorts of Italy due to its unique natural conditions. In addition, glacier skiing is possible in Cervinia.
After some research, I decided to put together information I have previously found out and create a complete guide on how to organize a holiday in Cervinia. I figured out how to get to the resort, where to stay & what to do there. I really hope this detailed information will help you plan your trip to Cervinia.
The skiing season in Cervinia lasts from November until May incl. However, you can visit Cervinia all-year-round. The lifts and cable cars also operate during the June-October period and you can use them to explore various hiking trails, available for tourists. The summer season is very colorful and picturesque in the Cervinia mountains and the resort offers a lot of summer activities besides hiking.
How to get to Cervinia
Where do you fly into to get to Cervinia? The most convenient way to get to the Cervinia ski resort is from Milan (190 km) or Turin (120 km); both cities have international airports that accept flights from different cities of the world (direct and connecting). You can check the current flight timetable to Milan or Turin via specialized searching services such as Aviasales and others. I think Aviasales is a very helpful online service which can filter the results as you may need for choosing the best available option. Then from Milan or Turin you can get to Cervinia by bus (the longest option), by taxi or transfer service or by rented car. All options are available both in Turin and Milan.
How to get to Cervinia from Turin
By bus: In Turin, buses depart from the Torino Porta Nuova Bus Station. Please note that it is required to make a change in CHATILL town. The total travel time is about 2,5 hours. The regular buses depart from Turin three times a day – in the morning, at lunch and in the evening. The current timetable can be checked on the official website of the bus carrier called Arriva Savda.
By taxi: To avoid making changes, tourists often choose such means of transport as a taxi or transfer services. Taxi/transfer services are usually more expensive, but more comfortable, especially if you bring with you a lot of baggage or ski equipment. You can always find a taxi at the exit from the arrival terminal, but if you are not familiar with local prices, it is safer to order a transfer service in advance. The cost of the transfer is similar to the cost of a taxi, but the driver will already be waiting for you at the time of your arrival. A transfer car can be ordered via specialized international services such as Kiwitaxi, Intui.Travel and others. The total travel time from Turin Airport to Cervinia is 1 hour 40 minutes.
I love both online services mentioned above as they offer a lot of available options in terms of the class of car. Tourists can choose the best one for them depending on how many people travel with them. Some cars are good for a single traveller while other cars are good for a group of people, for example when you are travelling with family or friends. You can also book a booster or a child seat if you travel with kids. During winter, group transfers are also available.
By rented car: Car rental is a very popular option in Italy; registering a car for renting takes no more than 20 minutes and requires a minimum package of documents, including a passport, an international driving license and a bank card to pay for the service. You can find rental offices at Turin Airport, and you can book a car in advance via specialized international services such as Discover Cars, Economybookings and other similar ones. The routes No. A5 and E612 leads from Turin to Cervinia. It takes you about 2 hours to get there. The distance is 125 km (see on the map). In my opinion, both online services are good as they have a decent search with a lot of filters to sort the results and find the best one.
How to get to Cervinia from Milan
By bus: To get to Cervinia by public transport from Milan, you need to take a regular bus. From Milan, buses in the direction of Cervinia depart from Lampugnano Bus Station. You need to make a change along the way in the town of CHATILL. The total travel time is about 3 hours. The regular buses depart from Milan three times a day – in the morning, at lunch and in the evening. The current timetable can be checked on the official website of the bus carrier called Arriva Savda.
By taxi: You also can use taxi or transfer services. It is especially useful in case you have a lot of luggage pieces or ski equipment or fly to Milan at night when public transport does not operate. A transfer car can be ordered via specialized international services such as Kiwitaxi, Intui.Travel and others. The total travel time from Milan airport to Cervinia is 2 hours 10 minutes. During winter, group transfers are also available.
By rented car: Car rental is an extremely popular option in Italy. To rent a car you need only a passport, an international driving license and a bank card to pay for the service. You can find rental offices at Milan Airport or in any district of Milan. You can also book a car for renting in advance via specialized international services such as Discover Cars, Economybookings and other similar ones. Routes No. A4/E64 and A5 lead from Milan to Cervinia. The total travel time is 3 hours. The distance is 195 km (see on the map). I would recommend using a few online services to compare the results and choose the best available option for you.
Where to stay in Cervinia
Cervinia is a resort consisting of several villages, the main ones are Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche. In addition to these two towns, accommodation can also be found in Torgnon, Camoise, Ante-Saint-André and others. The main types of accommodation available at the resort are hotels and apartments. However, if you wish, you can also find B&B`s, guest houses or holiday homes. To find the ideal price and quality option, I would recommend booking a room or an apartment in advance, preferably at least 2-3 months before the trip.
So, based on my research, popular accommodation options in Cervinia are:
Hotel Dama Bianca 3* (Valtournenche) – the hotel is located a 5-minute drive from the nearest ski lift. The lifts can also be reached by a free ski bus. The hotel has a restaurant and a bar. You can stay in rooms of various categories. Some rooms have a balcony. Breakfast or half board is included. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and is free of charge. Free public parking is provided on site. There is storage space for skis and luggage at the reception;
Hotel Des Roses 3* (Saint-André) – the hotel has a picturesque location and is surrounded with a garden. Guests are offered a terrace for relaxation, a restaurant, and a spa area. You can stay in rooms of various categories. Breakfast or half board is offered. Wi-Fi is available in the hotel rooms and is free of charge. As online booking services provide tourists reviews, I found out that free private parking is provided on site. The spa area includes a steam room, a sauna, a fitness room and hydromassage. Luggage and ski storage facilities are available at reception;
Hotel Mignon 3* (Breuil-Cervinia) – the hotel is located just 50 m from the nearest ski lifts. The hotel has a restaurant and a bar. Guests can stay in single, double or triple rooms. Each room is equipped with a coffee pot or a kettle. Breakfast or half board is included in the price. Wi-Fi is provided throughout the hotel and is free of charge. Free public parking is available nearby. There is a storage area for luggage and skis at the reception. Renting of ski equipment is also provided;

Red Fox Lodge 3* (Breuil-Cervinia) – the hotel is located 700 m from the nearest ski lifts. It features a garden, a bar and rooms with balconies. You can stay in studios or apartments. Breakfast is included. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and is free of charge. Free private parking is provided on site upon reservation. Luggage storage space is available at the reception desk.
Cervinia’s main resorts are connected with a free bus service, so you don’t have to worry about getting around. To get to the ski part of the resort, you need to use the ski lifts. In general, there is no difference where in Cervinia to stay, since the resorts are all interconnected.
What to do in Cervinia
Cervinia, as a ski resort, offers a lot of opportunities for skiing and active leisure time. There is some useful information I figured out:
- The total length of the tracks in Cervinia is about 150 km;
- 41 km are blue trails, 97 km are red trails, 8 km are black trails;
- In addition, Cervinia is also a part of a single ski area with the Swiss Zermatt, which means that the total length of the slopes is extended to 360 km;
- There are 23+ more ski lifts in Cervinia;
- Cervinia also has a snowboard park, a half-pipe area, free-riding and heli-skiing opportunities;
- The resort is children-friendly; you can find a separate snow park for children here.
The cost of ski passes varies depending on the duration and can be purchased for a period from several hours to a week of continuous skiing. There are discounts for pensioners, teenagers and children.
In addition to active pastime, Cervinia also offers possibilities for relaxation, for example, while staying at the resort, you can visit one of the wellness centers. These leisure centers are Excelsior Planet 4* at Breuil-Cervinia or Maison Tissiere 4* at Antey-Saint-Andre or Saint Hubertus Resort and some others. In addition, there is a sports complex called Polivalente, where you can find a swimming pool, hydromassage, saunas, baths, tennis courts, climbing walls and much more.
I found out that various leisure activities in Cervinia also include go-karting, paragliding, sledding, hot air ballooning, and glacier riding. In the summer, Cervinia perfectly suits for hiking (a unique location in the Aosta Valley), mountain biking, as well as for excursions around the region, exploring the inspiring countryside and cities of Northern Italy. In your free time I would recommend visiting Aosta town, Pont-Saint-Martin, Cogne and some other cozy alpine villages and towns.
Of course, it is worth visiting Turin as it is a historic center of the region. In case you have enough time, you also can travel to Maggiore Lake and its charming town of Stresa, where you can experience boat trips to Borromeo islands (in summer) and climbing to Mottarone mountain. To my mind, the best way to discover the surrounding area is by car because public transport has a inconvenient timetable.
Take a note! When going on a trip to Italy, do not forget to take out travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerging medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.
