When to travel to Kronplatz

Kronplatz is a ski resort consisting of many small villages. The main attraction of the resort is the Plan de Corones mountain range. The place is famous for its developed ski infrastructure, including blue and red slopes, as well as several high-quality black slopes. The resort is also perfect for cross-country skiing and snowboarding.

The resort villages also have a developed infrastructure, including hotels, restaurants, entertainment for every taste. All villages are connected with each other by bus. By choosing the Kronplatz region as your holiday destination, you can try not only your home ski area, but also, if you wish, the entire super-ski Dolomiti region.

After some research, I decided to put together information I have previously found out and create a complete guide on how to organize a holiday in Kronplatz. I figured out how to get to the resort, where to stay & what to do there. I really hope this detailed information will help you plan your trip to Kronplatz.

Travellers can visit Kronplatz any season of the year, depending on their preferences. Winter time offers skiing and snowboarding facilities and great snow coverage; Spring time is good for hiking and sightseeing as well as summer time, when nature is blossoming. Autumn is also perfect for hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing and other seasonal activities. Autumn natural landscapes are pretty colorful and picturesque.

How to get to Kronplatz

Where do you fly into to get to Kronplatz?

The most convenient way to get to Kronplatz is from Venice, which is the closest major Italian city. The distance between the city and the resort is 230 km, which is approximately 3.5-4 hours on the road. Tourists also often get to Kronplatz from Verona. Verona also has an international airport which takes a lot of flights from all over the world. The distance between Verona and Kronplatz is 250 km, which is approximately 4-4.5 hours on the road.

You can check the current flight timetable to Venice or Verona via different international services such as Aviasales and others. I personally use this online service very often when planning my upcoming trips around Europe. It has a convenient search with a lot of filters to narrow down the results as I may need. I have purchased tickets via Aviasales many times and I can totally recommend this service.

How to get to Kronplatz from Venice

By public transport: Kronplatz is located in the very north of Italy. It takes time to get to the resort by public transport, and you also have to make several changes along the route. So, from Venice there is a train to Kronplatz with a change in the town of Bressanone Brixen. The travel time is about 5 hours. The trains stop in the town of Brunico. Check the train timetable at the Raileurope booking service. Then you can get to other villages in the Kronplatz region from Brunico by local bus. Raileurope is a very convenient online service and I use it pretty much often as it helps me to find out the best available variants by sorting the results with various filters including departure and arrival time, price, duration of a trip, etc.

By transfer service: It is much more convenient to get to the resort using a taxi or transfer service, especially if you travel with ski equipment, a lot of luggage or, for example, with small children. True, the individual transfer option is more expensive. In winter, group transfers are carried out from Verona, Milan, Bergamo. You can also order an individual transfer from any city convenient for you.

The advantage of an individual transfer is that the driver will be waiting for you at the time of arrival with a nameplate and will help you carry and place your luggage. If you travel with children, you can order a child seat or booster seat in advance. Also, the car is usually equipped with bottled water and air conditioning. But the main advantage is, of course, the time you will save by using transfer services. You can book a suitable option via specialized international services such as Kiwitaxi and other similar ones. The travel time is approximately 3.5 hours. Kiwitaxi has a lot of positive reviews so I can definitely recommend it.

By rented car: You can also rent a car at the airport right after arrival. To rent a car you need to have a passport, an international driver’s license and a bank card. I recommend booking a car in advance, so you can save time. You can check the availability of the cars for the dates of your trip via the different online services such as Discover Cars, Economybookings and others. Venice and Kronplatz are connected with highway No. A27. The distance is 230 km. The travel time is about 4 hours (see on the map).

How to get to Kronplatz from Verona

By public transport: To get to Kronplatz from Verona, first you need to take a train and then to take a local bus. From Verona the train goes to Kronplatz with a change at Fortezza Franzensfeste. The travel time is a little over 5 hours. The trains stop in the town of Brunico. You can check the current train timetable at the Raileurope booking service. You can get to other villages in the Kronplatz region from Brunico by local bus.

By transfer service: As an option you can use group or individual transfer services to get to Kronplatz resorts. It is an especially useful option when you travel with your own ski equipment or with a lot of baggage or when you arrive in Verona at night. Kiwitaxi and other transfer services run along the route. The travel time is approximately 3 hours.

By rented car: Verona and Kronplatz are connected with highway No. A22/E45. You can book a car in advance to go to Kronplatz resort on your own. In this case you need to have a passport, a driver`s license and a bank card. The distance between Verona and Kronplatz is 250 km. The approximate travel time is 3,5 hours (see on the map). A car can be booked in advance via international online services such as Discover Cars, Economybookings and others. According to my experience, both online services have a convenient search and a lot of filters to sort the results and discover the best available options.

What to do in Kronplatz

Kronplatz is a year-round resort. In winter, this is the perfect place for skiing, and in summer it is simply a “paradise” for hiking. All resort villages are concentrated near the main “pearl” of the resort – the Plan de Corones mountain range. There is some useful information for visiting that I discovered:

  • Most of the pistes in Kronplatz are blue and red, but there are also some very significant black pistes.
  • In total, there are about 120 km of trails in Kronplatz.
  • The length of the longest route is 7 km.
  • The resort is served by more than 30 lifts, mostly closed cabins.

A special feature of skiing in Kronplatz is that the Plan de Corones mountain has a flat top and wooded slopes. The elevation difference is 1340 m. The resort has the following skiing opportunities:

  • Artificial snow is available on 100% of the slopes;
  • There are extensive areas for freeriding;
  • 2 snow parks with equipped half pipes for snowboarders are provided;
  • Tracks for cross-country skiing and sledding are also available.

The main entertainment except skiing is restaurants and bars. At the same time, you can find restaurants serving both local and international cuisine. Wellness centers are also open here. For example, the Cron4 wellness center in Brunico offers 13 different types of saunas, Kneipp therapy and several swimming pools, including a separate children’s pool.

  • The center is open daily from 10.00 to 23.00.

As I did some research, I found out that there are also several wellness centers available in San Vigilio di Marebbe, including the most famous Bad Valdander and Aquabad Cortina. Valdaora has the Bagni di Pervalle mineral baths, which offer various types of baths, massage rooms and fitness programs.

In summer, Kronplatz offers extensive hiking trails, golf courses, cycling and horse trails, climbing schools, zip lines and much more. In the summer, it’s worth coming to Kronplatz for fresh mountain air and amazingly picturesque landscapes. Note that from the top of Plan de Corones, in good weather, you can also see the neighboring Dolomites landscapes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As for architectural attractions, the region boasts several castles, many cathedrals and churches. The most famous are the castle in Brunico and the castle in San Lorenzo.

  • Brunico Castle is open every day except Tuesdays from 09.00 to 18.00.
  • Castle Sonnenberg in San Lorenzo is open every day, seven days a week.

As you can see, the Kronplatz region offers its guests unique natural conditions and developed infrastructure at the same time. There is plenty to do here both in winter and summer. Wide opportunities for active sports and relaxation allow tourists to combine various types of activities. At the same time, we should not forget that Kronplatz is a place of amazing landscapes, mountains with flat tops, wooded slopes, clean air, green meadows in summer and snowy valleys in winter. Local nature is the main attraction of the region.

Besides, all the villages of Kronplatz have a good transport connection. There are local buses running between villages so you can explore all of them, if you wish. In winter you can use special ski-buses (the price is 3 euro for a day ticket). In other seasons you can use regular buses to reach your preferred destination.

Take a note!

When going on a trip to Italy, do not forget to take out travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerging medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.
