When to travel to Follonica
Follonica is a resort town located in the southern part of the Tuscan Riviera. This resort is primarily beach-oriented thanks to one of the best beach lines on the shore which is long, sandy, with a gentle entrance to the sea. It is not surprising that the local beach has been repeatedly awarded the Blue Flag as one of the cleanest beaches in the world. Tourists love Follonica for its comfort and excellent natural conditions.
After some research, I decided to put together information I have previously found out and create a complete guide on how to organize a holiday in Follonica. To my mind, the best time for visiting Follonica is the summer period because the resort is ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Summers in Follonica are warm, sunny and perfectly suited for beach holidays. The swimming period lasts from June until October. Follonica is washed by warm the Tyrrhenian Sea. The resort infrastructure is developed very well and the natural landscapes are just gorgeous be it the sea or the local mountains.

Where to stay in Follonica
Follonica is not a large resort, but it is very cozy and tourist-friendly. No surprise, it is usually fully booked during the “high” season. That is why, if you have chosen Follonica as your main holiday destination, it is highly advisable to book accommodation in advance. Among the hotels in Follonica there are several 4- and 3-star hotels and some hotels in the 2*, 1* and without stars categories. As I discovered, the main options for accommodation here are apartments. The choice of apartments here is much wider. Options such as farm houses, holiday homes, country houses and guest houses are also somewhat popular.
When booking a hotel in Follonica, you should pay attention to such parameters as distance from the beach (some hotels have their own private beach area), the presence of restaurants or other food courts on site, the availability of Wi-Fi, parking (if you are traveling by car), etc. Please note that Follonica is a small town, so, in my point of view, it is better to choose a hotel with a wide range of services. For example, the following hotels are consistently popular:
Relais Torre Mozza – Dimore d`Epoca is located on the shore and has its own private beach area. There is a bar on site. You can stay in rooms of various categories, including family rooms. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and is free of charge. Free private parking is provided on site;

What to see in Follonica
The old part of Follonica is charming and very atmospheric. Narrow streets alternate with medieval squares, and cozy street cafes tempt you with their homemade cuisine. However, there are no significant historical sites in Follonica. The main advantage of the resort is its spacious sandy beaches, many of which are marked with the Blue Flag. Follonica is ideal for a beach holiday. Follonica is located in the province of Grosseto, close to other famous resorts called Punta Ala, Orbetello, Saturnia, Marina di Grosseto, but it is in Follonica, unlike other resorts, that the Italians choose to spend their holidays and this says a lot.
For an excursion vacation, you should go to the surrounding area. For example, in the neighborhood of Follonica there are pine forests that have healing properties. Nearby you can find the thermal area of Orbetello and Saturnia, where you can swim in natural mineral pools in summer. According to my research, travellers can get from Follonica to Saturnia via highways No. SP159 and E80 via Grosseto (approximately 100 km), and to Orbetello via highway No. E80 via Grosseto (about 85 km).

You can also observe the Italian island of Elba from Follonica, which can be reached with an excursion ferry. The closest historical cities are Perugia and Arezzo. The Raccordo Autostradale No. A1 Perugia (213 km) leads to Perugia, and the SS223 (179 km) leads to Arezzo. Florence is also just 170 km away, where highway No. E80 leads from Follonica. You can also get to all these historical cities by train, because there is a train station in Follonica.
In general, I can say that Follonica is ideal for a traditional beach holiday, and, thanks to its developed transport infrastructure, Follonica is a convenient starting point for day trips. The holiday season lasts in Follonica from May to September inclusive. The sea here, in the southern part of the Tuscan Riviera, remains warm for quite a long time, in fact until the end of September – beginning of October, so the beach season in Follonica lasts quite a long time, there are practically no rains or cloudiness.

Take a note! When going on a trip to Italy, do not forget to take out travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerging medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.
