How to get to Saturnia from Rome
When to travel to Saturnia
Saturnia is a famous thermal resort in Italy. Located in Tuscany, 170 km from Rome, the resort is in constant demand among both Italians and tourists from all over the World. The combination of a mild climate throughout the year, coniferous and oak forests in the surrounding area and, of course, thermal springs with a constant temperature of 37.5 degrees make the place a popular balneological resort with many spa hotels.
After some research, I decided to put together information I have previously found out and create a complete guide on how to organize a holiday in Saturnia. I figured out how to get to the town, where to stay & what to do there. I really hope this detailed information will help you plan your trip to Saturnia.
Surprisingly, you can find quite affordable places to stay in here and go to the Cascate del Mulino to swim in the springs, where free entry is available for everyone. The town of Saturnia is also well located relatively close to the seaside resorts. The nearest ones – Orbetello and Marina di Grosseto – are 55 and 70 km away, respectively, so a holiday at the thermal springs can be successfully combined with a beach holiday at neighboring seaside resorts, washed by the warm Tyrrhenian Sea.
How to get to Saturnia
Where do you fly into to get to Saturnia? You can get to Saturnia from any major city in Italy; the most convenient way to do this is from Rome. The distance between the cities is 170 km, which can be covered by train with a bus change in neighboring Albinia or by taxi (or transfer service) directly. There are direct flights to Rome from different cities around the world. The current flight timetable can be checked via specialized online services such as Aviasales and others. I often use this online service as it helps me a lot to compare different flight options and choose the optimal one.
How to get to Saturnia from Rome
By train + bus: Saturnia does not have its own railway station; the nearest one is in the neighboring large town of Albinia. Trains from Rome to Albinia take 2.5 hours and the ticket costs about 24 euros one-way. You can check the current train timetable and purchase tickets in advance at the Raileurope booking service. Next, in Albinia you need to take the bus of the local carrier TIEMME SPA (website is available only in Italian) to Saturnia.
By taxi: As an option, you can also use the services of a taxi or a transfer. Current transfer prices can be checked via different online services, such as Kiwitaxi and others. The total travel time from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Saturnia is 1 hour 50 minutes. Based on my research, Kiwitaxi has a lot of positive reviews that is why I can recommend it. For sure, there are a lot of other taxi services available at the airport.
By rented car: Another option of how to get to Saturnia is to rent a car in Rome. Rental offices operate even at Rome Fiumicino Airport, and it usually takes not much time to register a car for renting. Naturally, you must have an international driving license and a bank card for payment. Having a car “at hand” will allow you not only to get to the resort, but also to explore the surrounding area, as well as go to the sea, which is located 50-70 km from Saturnia.
You can rent a car at rental companies such as B-Rent, JoyRent, InterRent, Locauto, Alamo, Enterprise and others. You can also book a car in advance via various online services such as Discover Cars, Economybookings, etc. Based on my experience, both online services are good. I would recommend comparing them to find out the best available options. Rome and Saturnia are connected with #E80 motorway (see on the map).
Where to stay in Saturnia
Despite the fact that Saturnia is a relatively small town, the hotel infrastructure is well developed here. Guests of the resort can stay in hotels of different star categories, including a 5-star hotel, or, conversely, in hotels without stars of the bed and breakfast type. In addition, here you can rent an apartment or choose a holiday home, country house, farmhouse or even a villa. As I discovered, hotels in Saturnia are well equipped with everything necessary for relaxation; in many hotels you can find swimming pools with thermal waters, which eliminates the need to visit public thermal baths.
Terme di Saturnia Spa & Golf Resort 5* is considered to be one of the best in Saturnia. It offers its guests a golf course and a spa with Roman baths and natural pools. The hotel has a bar, hydromassage, a sauna, a garden and free private parking on site. Wi-Fi is also available free of charge throughout the hotel. There is entertainment in the evenings, and during the day you can spend time on the tennis court or go cycling around the area (renting is free).
Saturnia Tuscany Hotel 4* is located in the town of Poggio Murella, neighboring Saturnia; the distance between the towns is 3 km. The hotel is housed in a Tuscan villa and has a wellness center and restaurant on site. In the center you can find an outdoor seasonal swimming pool, hydromassage, and a sauna. Free public parking is available next to the hotel. A golf course can be found within a few kilometers. The hotel has standard, superior and deluxe rooms.
Hotel Villa Clodia 3* is located in a picturesque location with panoramic views of the Tuscan landscapes. Hotel guests can use a swimming pool, a gym, a sauna or relax on the terrace. Wi-Fi and parking are provided free of charge. The hotel offers standard, superior rooms and suites. Inside the room you can find a safe, air conditioning, a hairdryer, a telephone, TV and a minibar. Breakfast is included in the price.
Hotel Saturno Fontepura 3* is located on a hilltop with stunning views of the Tuscan valley. The hotel has an outdoor swimming pool with thermal waters from its own spring. Guests can also relax in the on-site restaurant and in the garden. Free private parking is available. Wi-Fi is also provided free of charge. The hotel offers classic or superior rooms.
Bagno Santo Hotel 3* is located in a villa and has panoramic views of the Tuscan valley. You can relax at the hotel in the multi-level swimming pool, on the terrace, and in the restaurant. As online booking services provide tourists reviews, I found out that there is a sauna and hydromassage in the hotel. Free Wi-Fi and free private parking are provided. The hotel offers standard rooms or apartments.
What to see in Saturnia
Saturnia is good for its natural landscapes and thermal springs. Situated in the countryside, Saturnia is surrounded by the idyllic valleys and hills of Tuscany, perfect for hiking and cycling. The resort has many thermal baths where you can try the healing powers of local springs.
The famous natural cascading pool is open to visitors free of charge throughout the year. The water temperature there is around 37.5 degrees. You can go to the surrounding area for historical sights, and 50-70 km from the town is the Tuscan Riviera with its best sandy beaches, which are very popular in the summer.
The main attraction of Saturnia is the natural cascading pool called Cascate del Mulino, which looks like a stepped waterfall. In summer it is quite crowded here, since the cascade is free to visit. Nevertheless, the water stays warm throughout the year, so healing baths can be taken all year round. There are slightly fewer cascades at the natural thermal waterfalls called Cascate del Gorello, however, it has no less beneficial properties. Also, numerous thermal springs can be found at local hotels. As far as I know, to use them, it is better to become a guest of one of these hotels.
Saturnia is surrounded with green hills and valleys that are pleasant to walk throughout the year. Also, in the closest surroundings of the town you can find the medieval fortress of Aldobrandeschi and numerous archaeological sites, because this area has been inhabited since ancient times. If you are a big fan of historical attractions, then it makes sense to visit neighbouring Perugia (150 km), Siena (110 km), and Arezzo (150 km). One problem is that public transport in Saturnia is rather poor; there is no railway station, so a rented car is considered to be the ideal option for getting around here. I would definitely recommend renting a car to travel around this area.
For a beach holiday, you can go to world-famous resorts such as Orbetello, Albinia, Marina di Grosseto, Castiglione della Pescaia, Punta Ala, Follonica and others. Here you will find spacious sandy beaches equipped with everything you need. There is the warm Tyrrhenian Sea and picturesque sea promenades as well as rather developed resort infrastructure.
Take a note! When going on a trip to Italy, do not forget to take out travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerging medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.
