What to see in Orbetello
There really is something to see in Orbetello. Moreover, this applies to both natural attractions and historical, architectural and archaeological ones. For example, one of the symbols of the town is a windmill built in the 16th century, located in the Gulf, right in the water. This is one of nine mills that has survived to this day.
Of no less interest are fragments of the Etruscan walls that surround the resort, and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, located in the central square of the town. The ancient fort of Saline and the ruins of the monastery of Saint Angelo are also located near here. In the historical part of Orbetello, there are quite a lot of preserved attractions such as churches, forts, and watchtowers from different periods of history. They stand scattered along the sea shore. At the southern tip of Orbetello, in the area of Ansedonia, there is an extensive archaeological area.
But the town is not known for its architecture alone. Here you can also see picturesque natural places, because Orbetello is actually located in a magnificent Gulf. The shore of the resort is called Laguna Orbetello. For some of the most dramatic natural scenery, head to the northern tip of the resort, the so-called Talamone area. Here the rocky shores meet the stormy sea, and a breathtaking sea panorama opens up.
In the heart of Orbetello, in its central areas, the greatest interest is the 3 sand spits that connect the shore part of the resort with the peninsula of Monte Argentario. The sand spits of Tombolo della Feniglia and Tombolo della Giannella have a considerable length – about 6 km; the central spit of Campo Reggio is a little less. The Orbetello shore and spits have a very diverse flora, including sand dunes, pine groves, and typical Mediterranean plants. The Orbetello shore, together with the spits, form the best places for a beach holiday.
While relaxing in Orbetello, be sure to visit the adjacent peninsula of Monte Argentario. The peninsula is famous not only for its peak called Punta Telegrafo, but for the local settlements of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole that are also interesting to observe. By the way, there are also good beaches here. Among the attractions on the peninsula, you can find the Stella fortress built in the 16th century, the Rocca Aldobrandesca fortress, Palazzo dei Governanti which is a palace built in the 16th century and other objects. The peninsula is of particular interest to divers, sailing enthusiasts (there is even a small port where yachts moor), and golf lovers (there are extensive golf courses).
In general, it can be said that Orbetello, as a resort, is suitable for those tourists who prefer a leisurely holiday, natural beauty and a combination of beach time with excursions. Orbetello is considered to be a real oasis of untouched nature; the local beaches are annually awarded the Blue Flag as the cleanest beaches in the world, and in the surrounding area there are numerous natural parks that are definitely worth visiting.
Take a note! When going on a trip to Italy, do not forget to take out a travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerged medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase an insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.
