What to see & do in Bad-Kissingen
I have travelled around Southern Germany multiple times and I was absolutely amazed with the number of natural and historical attractions. The local towns such as Bad Kissingen kept their authenticity and can boast great architectural and historical sites, plus thermal spa opportunities. Being charmed with towns of Southern Germany, I have decided to put together information I have previously discovered and create a series of guides on how to organize a holiday in Bavaria. Based on my research, I found out how to get there, where to stay & what to see. I really hope this detailed information will help you plan your trip to Bad Kissingen.
When to travel to Bad-Kissingen
Bad Kissingen is a thermal resort located in the north of Bavaria in the historical region of Franconia. On the territory of the town there are 4 mineral springs, each of which has its own “specialization”. Sanatoriums, spa hotels, parks and gardens – that’s what Bad Kissingen is famous for.
Along with two other German thermal spas – Baden-Baden and Bad Reichenhall – Bad-Kissingen is one of the most popular thermal resorts in Germany. I visited some thermal spas in Germany and can definitely recommend such a nice activity to try. In addition to treatment with mineral waters, Bad Kissingen is also interesting for sightseeing, because many historical and architectural objects have been preserved here.
With a purpose of medical treatment, you can come to Bad-Kissingen all year round. Local sanatoriums and thermal complexes work any season of the year. In order to see local attractions it is better to choose the period of time from mid-April to mid-October when the weather is as pleasant as possible. Green parks of the resort and picturesque countryside are especially attractive this time of the year.

Some hotels offer spa care with mineral water without the need to visit the thermal baths. A big advantage of a holiday in Bad Kissingen is its prices. The cost of living in the hotels is significantly lower in comparison with other similar resorts. This is probably due to the lesser popularity of the resort outside of Germany. Most hotels in Bad Kissingen offer breakfast included in the price, many have their own private parking. For those who travel by car I would advise to look for a hotel with parking, as there are few public parking lots in the town.

What to see & do in Bad-Kissingen
Mineral springs are considered to be the main purpose of visiting Bad Kissingen. Access to them is available at the spa park, as well as at thermal complexes. In addition to the mineral springs, the historical center of the town with its architectural features, characteristic only for the Franconian region, is also worth visiting. The town has many gothic churches, colorful low-rise buildings etc. The numerous parks and gardens of the town are great for walking after mineral water treatment. For children, the main attraction of Bad Kissingen is the local zoo.
In Bad Kissingen, 4 mineral springs were found, and all of them have different healing features. Each of them has its own park area and resort facilities. Based on my research, they are called Rakosi-Pandur, Kissiger Bittewasser, Luitpold-Sprudel and Maxbrunnen. In addition, the town has a cooling tower that has an inhalation effect due to the air saturated with sea salt and pine aromas.
Also, there are thermal baths where you can try various relaxing treatments. The Kissalis Terme has a separate area of thermal pools, the temperature of which varies from 32 to 38 degrees; a sauna park with more than 10 saunas; a spa area where massages, mud therapy, aromatherapy, stone therapy, and other procedures are carried out, as well as a restaurant, children’s recreation area and much more. Prices for additional procedures can be found on the official website of the thermal complex (available in English and German). There is some useful information for visiting that I discovered:
- The entrance fee to the thermal pools starts from 16 euros;
- Сombined tickets (thermal pools + sauna area) are also available. Prices start from 20 euros.
The center of Bad Kissingen is an extensive park area, smoothly flowing into one another. Thus, the local Rose Garden, which is represented by 150 varieties of the most noble flower – roses, occupies a huge area, surrounded by elegant villas and graceful fountains. As I see it, it is one of the best areas for long-distance walking in the town.
In the Spa Park (the so-called Kurpark in German) you should pay attention to the architectural monument of Regentenbau with its famous arcades, drinking colonnades, fountains and bridges. The neighboring park of Luitpold is divided into a thematic area, for example, there is a Mediterranean area with plants, flowers and trees characteristic of this climatic zone. There is also an area for walking barefoot, consisting of various surfaces, strolling on which imitates a natural foot massage.
Walking in the old part of the town is no less interesting, since a large number of architectural monuments of different periods are situated here (of course, Gothic style prevails). The magnificent Baroque buildings of the Town Theater and Casino stand out against numerous Gothic buildings. Among the religious buildings, the Russian Orthodox Church, the Chapel of Mary, the tower of the Gothic Church of the Heart of Jesus, the Jacobskirche, the Evangelical Church and some other ones are particularly interesting.
Children are usually curious about visiting the Klaushof Zoo. The animals live here in the environment imitating natural conditions. Part of the zoo is contact, which is especially liked by kids. That`s the reason why it is worth coming to Bad-Kissingen with kids. I found out detailed information for visiting the zoo:
- The zoo is open daily from 09.00 to 18.00 (until 17.00 – in winter).
- The entrance fee is 4 euros for adults; 1,5 euros for pupils; kids under 6 years old are free.
- You can get to the zoo from the Kurpark by a special spa tram (in summer).
Bad-Kissingen with its numerous thermal baths and recreation parks is a wonderful place for relaxing. If you choose to travel to the resort at the period of mid-April to mid-October, you will be pleased with the blossoming and colorful nature environment. Winter time is also good with its crystal snow outside and warm thermal baths inside. So, choose wisely. In my point of view, Bad Kissingen is an interesting place to visit at any time of the year.
Take a note! When going on a trip to Germany, do not forget to take out travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerging medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.

oh my goodness. I have never heard of Kissingen before but your pictures have transported me. I love look of all the buildings and I am especially loving the fountains .
We enjoyed our first visit to Germany on our recent river cruise. But we did not get to visit Bad-Kissingen on this trip. We had cooler weather and would have loved to visit a thermal resort area like this. And to find a spot that has so much more to offer as well. How many days might I need to really relax?
Hello!
It depends. If you are planning to retreat, then you might need about a week or more. If you just want to come across and enjoy local architecture and gardens, then one or two days will be enough.
Cheers,
Julia
