How to get to Wurzburg from Munich
I have travelled around Southern Germany a lot and I was absolutely charmed with this combination of natural and historical attractions. The local towns kept their authenticity and can boast great architecture, including palaces, castles, cathedrals, etc while the local countryside is full of colors and hidden gems. Plus, getting around is pretty much easy here, because of developed transport infrastructure. I tried different means of transport, including trains, buses and cars and I can confirm that they are pretty much convenient and fast for getting around.
When to travel to Wurzburg
The town of Wurzburg is located in the historical region of Lower Franconia on the territory of modern Bavaria. This city is famous for its baroque monuments, wine-making traditions and for one of the oldest universities in Germany. Every year Wurzburg attracts a large number of tourists, competing with another famous city in the region – Nuremberg.
You can visit Wurzburg any season of the year as the local climate is considered to be mild. Winter time attract travelers with its holiday vibes, including Christmas fairs, hot mulled wine, tasteful gingerbread and festive illumination. Sometimes it can be snowy, but for a short period of time. Spring comes to Bavaria quite early. It pleases with blossoming nature and warm weather.
The summers are also warm and sunny. Unlike southern countries of Europe, Germany is an ideal place for travelling during the summer time as it doesn`t get too hot. Bavaria perfectly suits for city sightseeing, strolling around and enjoying the countryside in summer. Autumn is also a good choice for travelling in Bavaria, including Wurzburg, as nature becomes colorful and the weather is still quite warm and sunny.

What to see & do in Wurzburg
The main attractions of Wurzburg are historical. Wurzburg architecture is an excellent example of the Baroque style, and the main residence of the town, made in the Baroque style, is even included in the list of UNESCO sites. In addition, the town lies in the picturesque valley of the Main River, surrounded with hills where beautiful vineyards grow. It is not surprising that Wurzburg is the center of winemaking.
During the Second World War, the old districts of Wurzburg were significantly damaged, some of them were restored, some managed to survive the bombing. Today, Wurzburg is a typical Franconian town with colorful buildings and squares.
One of the most significant attractions of the town is the Wurzburg Residence. Considered to be one of the finest baroque examples in the area, it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The construction of the residence dates back to the 18th century. The interior decoration is also made in the festive baroque and rococo styles. In total, the residence has more than 400 rooms. The rooms are decorated with numerous ceiling frescoes, marble and glass panels. There is a Franconian fountain and a landscaped park at the courtyard of the palace.
- The Wurzburg Palace is open daily from 09.00 to 18.00 (from 10.00 to 16.30 in winter), the gardens are open until 20.00.
- The entrance ticket costs 9 euros.
Another architectural symbol of the town is the Marienberg fortress. The fortress is located on a hill; it can be seen from almost anywhere in the town. The fortress consists of a range of buildings, e.g., towers, fortress walls, a church, gates and many others. Today, the fortress houses the Museum of Local History, where a large collection of sculptural works has been shown. There is also an observation deck with a view of the town and the terraces with vineyards. There is a landscaped flower garden in the courtyard of the fortress, which is definitely worth visiting. There is some practical information for visiting that I discovered:
- The fortress is open daily from 09.00 to 18.00 (from 10.00 to 16.30 in winter), except Mondays.
- The entrance ticket costs 4 euros.
As for museums, in Wurzburg you can find a lot of them, be it art galleries or thematic areas.
✓ There is, for example, the Franz Siebold Museum. The museum is dedicated to the culture of Japan, a passionate admirer of which was the scientist Franz Siebold. Here you can find many interesting exhibits related to the culture and history of Japan.
- The museum is open daily from 14.30 to 17.30, except Mondays.
- The entrance ticket costs 4.5 euros.
✓ You can find many artworks by famous authors at the local Cultural Center. It exhibits works of fine art from the periods of Romanticism, the Biedermeier period, Impressionism, Expressionism, Modern Art.
- The museum is open from 11.00 to 18.00, except Mondays.

As for religious sites in Wurzburg, you can find the Wurzburg Cathedral and the Chapel of the Virgin Mary here. Mainly Wurzburg Cathedral was built in the 11th century, with subsequent restorations in the 15th century (Gothic elements) and in the 18th century (Baroque elements). The building is decorated with several towers. If you go inside, you can see stucco, sculptures, stained glass windows, frescoes, columns and much more. The magnificent decoration of the cathedral is literally amazing. I found out some detailed information for visiting the cathedral:
- The cathedral is open daily from 09.30 to 17.30.
- Admission is free.
- There is also the treasury of the cathedral (entry – 3 euros per person), which stores gold jewelry from the period from the 11th to the 20th century.
- The treasury is open to visitors daily from 13.00 to 17.00.
Another magnificent building in the center of Wurzburg is the chapel of the Virgin Mary. A tower adjoins the main building. Inside the building you can see sculptures, paintings, bas-reliefs, statues of Adam and Eve, stained glass windows. Pay attention to the bas-relief sculpture at the entrance to the chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.
- The chapel is open from 09.00 to 19.00.
- Admission is free.
As you can see, Wurzburg has magnificent architectural monuments, be it cathedrals, fortresses, palaces or museums. If you come to Wurzburg for just one day, then it makes sense to focus on the main touristic places and walk along the route Residence – Cathedral – Chapel of the Virgin Mary – Marienburg Fortress. If you plan to stay in Wurzburg longer, then the local museums are also worthy of attention.
Take a note! When going on a trip to Germany, do not forget to take out a travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerged medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase an insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.
