The countryside of Bad Reichenhall
I have travelled around Southern Germany a lot and I was absolutely charmed with the combination of natural and historical attractions. The local towns like Bad Reichenhall kept their authenticity and can offer a lot of things to do while the local countryside is full of hidden gems. Plus, getting around is pretty much easy here, because of developed transport infrastructure. I tried different means of transport, including trains, buses and cars and I can confirm that they are pretty much convenient and fast. Based on my research, I found out how to get to the town, where to stay & what to see. I really hope this detailed information will help you plan your trip to Bad-Reichenhall.
When to travel to Bad-Reichenhall
Bad Reichenhall is a wonderful little town in the very south of Germany. Geographically located in the German region of Bavaria, Bad Reichenhall is situated near the border with Austria. The town is a balneological and climatic resort though. At the countryside of Bad Reichenhall, there are springs with mineral water; you can try their healing features by visiting numerous thermal complexes.
In addition, the town is located in the foothills of the Alps, which makes its air fresh. The mild climate only contributes to the general vibes of relaxation. Bad Reichenhall is about as well-known a mineral resort as Baden-Baden. Both of these resorts are famous for their mineral springs and mild healing climate.
You can visit Bad-Reichenhall all year round, but be ready that the winters here are snowy and a bit frosty. The springs and summers are usually warm, but not hot, that is why you can hike and stroll around anytime you want. The autumns are a bit rainy, but colorful and picturesque, especially in the countryside.

However, the closest international airport to the resort is Munich Franz Josef Strauss Airport. Check the current flight timetable from your city at Aviasales booking service. You can get from Munich to Bad Reichenhall either by train or by car. Salzburg also has an airport, but the variety of destinations are not as wide as at Munich airport.

Based on my map search, Salzburg and Bad-Reichenhall are connected with highway #A1. The distance is 20 km. The travel time is about 25 minutes by car.
By public transport: To reach Bad-Reichenhall you can use either a bus or a train. Both depart from Salzburg Train Station. You can choose buses # 260 or 180. I love this online service as I can compare different available options to choose the most suitable for me. I also can set up individual settings to improve my experience of searching.
By renting a car: You can rent a car in Salzburg right after arrival at the airport or at the rental offices in the city. You can also book a car in advance on the different booking services such as Discover Cars, Economybookings, etc. The rules for renting a car are relatively simple: almost anyone with an international driver’s license can rent a car.

What to see & do in Bad-Reichenhall
Bad Reichenhall is a small town with a picturesque Old Centre, where historical monuments and churches have been preserved. Of course, tourists come to Bad Reichenhall not only for architectural sightseeing. First of all, tourists are attracted by the countryside – its green meadows, small crystal lakes and magnificent mountains. The mineral baths of Bad Reichenhall are also very popular.
The town attractions deserve your attention, in particular, the Salt Museum. Since Bad Reichenhall is a balneological resort, mineral salt is very popular here. In the museum you will be told about the production of salt, its development and other interesting facts. I found out detailed information for visiting the museum:
- The Salt Museum is open from 10 am to 4 pm during the period of April,1 to October,31;
- The Salt Museum is open from 11 am to 3 pm during the period of November,1 to March, 31 (except Mondays);
- Each guided visit takes approx. 45 minutes;
- Please, pay attention, that the temperature in Saltern is +12 degrees all year round;
- The entrance fee is 13 euros for adults and 7 euros for kids.
You also should not ignore the old part of the town. It is the so-called Floriani quarter, where all kinds of boutiques, shops and cozy cafes are concentrated. This is a local pedestrian promenade. You can see here the remains of ancient Roman fortifications, the churches of St. Egidi and Zeni, which amazes with their sizes.
Thermal Baths of Bad Reichenhall
There are several thermal complexes in Bad Reichenhall, but perhaps it’s worth starting with the inhalation park of Gradiewerke. The park is located in the open air; the essence of its beneficial features is the combination of mineral water with useful plants, such as, for example, hawthorn. The mineral spring sprays water on plants throughout the day. As a result, air is saturated with beneficial features, and this is how the inhalation effect is achieved. The park is located on the area of 160 meters; there is also a fountain with mineral water and a pump room. Park visiting is free.
The thermal complex of “Rupertus” offers relaxation in outdoor and indoor mineral pools, saunas, as well as spa treatments, massages, jacuzzi and other wellness procedures designed for rest and recovery. The outdoor pools and jacuzzis have mountain views and are enriched with alpine air, also considered to be beneficial to health. There is some useful information for visiting that I discovered:
- Rupertus Therme is open daily, from 10 am to 10 pm
- A visit to the complex on a daily card costs 23,5 euros or 19,5 for 4 hours of visiting
- The sauna area is additionally paid – from 30,50 euros for 2-hour staying
- Massages and spa treatments are paid separately if desired
In addition, pump rooms with mineral water can be found throughout the town. A combination of pine forests and mountains nearby makes the microclimate of Bad Reichenhall unique, which is why the town is considered to be one of the best resorts in Bavaria. To my mind, travelling to the region without visiting a picturesque countryside will be incomplete and Bad Reichenhall is one of the suitable places to feel the local atmosphere.
The countryside of Bad Reichenhall
The surroundings of Bad Reichenhall are surprisingly picturesque. First of all, these are mountains, lakes, green meadows (and in winter snow-covered glades where you can ski). There are also several interesting objects in the area, such as the Martzol castle, the Gruttenstein and Karlstejn fortresses, which definitely deserve a visit.
To see the surroundings of Bad Reichenhall, just take the ski lift to the nearest Predigstuhl mountain (height – 1600 meters). A breathtaking panorama of the whole town and its countryside is available here.
- A ticket for the ski lift for round trip costs 49 euros (27 euros one way)
- During the summer time the cable car is open from 9 am until 6 pm (Sunday-Wednesday); until 8 pm (Thursday – Saturday)
The Thumsee Lake lies right at the foot of the local mountains, in the countryside of Bad Reichenhall. Local hotels and guest houses offer to stay right on the shores of the Thumsee, but you can explore the lake on your own. You can get here by local bus # 2 (check the current timetable online), which goes through the whole town directly to the lake and makes 3 stops along its shore. You can get out and enjoy nature at any stop. There are also hiking trails in Bad Reichenhall that include a visit to Thumsee Lake.
Take a note! When going on a trip to Germany, do not forget to take out travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerging medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.

Wow! This is a very cool spot! I would 100% love to try the thermal baths and inhalation park. Germany has so much to offer a visitor!!
I used to live in Germany but I’ve never explored the south ( well minus few visits in Munich )
Bad Reichenhall Sounds like a lovely place! How long would you recommend to go there for ?
Hello!
It depends. If you want to observe only some monuments and/or some natural attractions around, 1-3 days will be enough. If you are planning to take a cure at the thermal complexes, then it will probably take you more time.
Cheers,
Julia
This is the first I have heard of Bad Reichenhall, The salt museum sounds fascinating but why does the temperature remain at +12 all year round?
Hello!
Because it is located deep down 🙂
