When to travel to Titisee
Titisee is a small lake surrounded by forests and hills. It is located in the middle of the Black Forest National Park in Germany. Despite its small size, especially in comparison with neighboring Constance Lake, the Titisee is considered to be a truly “pearl” among the resort destinations. The terrain, climate and ecological conditions are unique here. I have been to the Black Forest National Park and, in my opinion, it is a lovely natural area to travel to. There are lots of hiking trails and natural attractions and Titisee is one of them.
Titisee was formed as a result of the melting of the glacier; it is located near the highest point of the Black Forest National Park called Feldberg Mountain, in the Baden-Wurttemberg region. Picturesque natural landscapes make holidays on the Titisee desirable all year round. In the summers you can relax by the lake, in winters you can ski from the mountain slopes.
The main town on the lakeside is Titisee-Neustadt, where tourists most often stay. The nearest major town, located 25 km away, is Freiburg, so tourists often combine visiting Freiburg with a holiday on Titisee. It is advisable to travel to Titisee all year round depending on your preferences – hiking or skiing.
How to get to Titisee
Where do you fly into to get to Titisee? The nearest major cities to the Titisee that have international airports are Frankfurt and Stuttgart. Karlsruhe city also has a local airport. Check the current timetable from your city at Aviasales booking service. You can get from these cities to the resort by any means of transport, either public transport or rented car.
How to get to Titisee from Frankfurt
I did some research and found out that the distance between Frankfurt and Titisee is just over 300 km. The city of Titisee-Neustadt and Frankfurt are connected with highway #A5. You can get to Titisee by train (requires a change in Freiburg), by bus (requires a change in Kehl), or by car.
By train: Trains run every hour from Frankfurt main station towards Freiburg city. Then you need to make a change to reach Titisee-Neustadt, the nearest village on the lake. The total travel time is about 3 hours. There are high-speed trains from Frankfurt to Freiburg, there are regional ones from Freiburg to Neustadt. Train timetables can be checked at the Raileurope booking service. I use Raileurope a lot when planning my trips and it is always super convenient as I can compare different routes, time, departure points, etc.
By bus: There are no direct buses on this route, but you can get there with a small change in the town of Kehl, located in southern Germany, on the border with France. Buses run three times a day from Frankfurt Central Station or Terminal 2 at Frankfurt Airport. Travel time is 6 hours, a change is about 1 hour.
By renting a car: Another popular way to travel between cities in Germany is to rent a car. You can rent a car right at the airport upon arrival, or at any other rental offices in Frankfurt. You can also book a car in advance on the different booking services such as Discover Cars, Economybookings, etc. Based on my research, both services have a great number of positive reviews.
◊A useful tip: Compare a few of booking services to choose the best price. Roads in Germany are high-speed (the so-called autobahns), so you can move along quickly and comfortably. Frankfurt and Titisee-Neustadt are connected with highway # A5 (see on the map). I travelled a lot along the autobahns in Germany and I can say they are pretty much comfortable for moving around and it is often the fastest way to get to the desired travel destination.
How to get to Titisee from Stuttgart
The distance between Stuttgart and Titisee is about 150 km, they are connected with the highway #A81. You can get from Stuttgart to the Titisee by train (with a short change), by bus (direct), or by car.
By train: There are no direct trains between Stuttgart and Titisee-Neustadt, but you can get there with a small change in one of the German towns along the way. Train timetables can be checked at the Raileurope booking service.
By bus: From Stuttgart Airport there is a direct bus to Titisee-Neustadt once a day. Travel time – 3 hours. The bus departs from Stuttgart at 9.45 am.

What to see & do in Titisee
The main attractions of the Titisee are natural ones. In addition to the lake itself, hiking is possible here, since the area lies in the forests and mountains of the Black Forest National Park. Based on my experience, there are always many hiking and cycling routes available for tourists in the park. Besides, the local thermal baths are open for relaxation and swimming. There is also a water park in the town of Titisee-Neustadt, so the place is fully equipped for family holidays. In winter, Titisee is also a popular place to travel, since local slopes are suitable for skiing.
The Schneeberglifte-Waldau ski area is located 9 km from Titisee-Neustadt. A 2.5 km track is open here for skiing and snowboarding. Tourists are served by 3 ski lifts. The trails are considered to be easy and suitable for beginners. The cost of a day ticket is from 19 euros for adults and 14 euros for children. The resort operates from mid-December to mid-March. A ski school and a restaurant are open to the guests.
Another ski area, called Schwarzenbach, is at a higher altitude and has a steeper angle of inclination. The route is serviced by 1 ski lift. The opening hours of the ski lift are from 13.00 to 17.00. You can also try tobogganing here. Schwarzenbach’s trails have different levels of difficulty and several different directions. Both resorts are located on the slopes of the Feldberg Mountain, which is considered to be the highest point in the entire Black Forest Park.
There is a famous Badeparadies thermal spa, which has several relaxation areas – Galaxy (for outdoor activities), Palm Oasis and Wellness Oasis. In the first area you can find a Water Park and more than 25 water attractions; the area is suitable for both adults and children. Water slides, wave pool, diving platform – all this can be found in the Galaxy area. The entrance fee varies depending on the time of your stay.
The second area is a palm oasis with heated pools and aqua massage. You can relax here in the jacuzzi or go to the steam bath. There is also a panoramic outdoor pool with picturesque views of the Black Forest. The third area is suitable for total relaxation. There are sun loungers, a relaxing shower and several types of saunas. To get into the third area, you need to pay extra money for the selected ticket.
- The water park is open daily from 14.00 to 18.00, the other areas – from 10 am to 10 pm.
I visited some thermal spas in the Baden-Wurttemberg region and I can definitely recommend such a nice activity to try. It is a pure pleasure!
Titisee is located in one of the most picturesque areas in all of Germany, so many hiking and cycling routes have been represented here. They have different levels of difficulty and different distances. You can choose a route according to your individual level of training.
The easiest are the routes around the lake itself. They do not require climbing into the mountains, but they offer stunning views of the lake. These routes are quite popular among tourists, so the trails sometimes are over-crowded. After a walk around the lake, you can always do water activities – sail a boat and try more extreme water attractions.
The most difficult and longest routes are the so-called Westweg, Mittleweg and Ostweg, which go deep into the Black Forest and explore its various parts. In order not to get lost in the forest, you can rent special GPS navigators in tourist centers. For those who prefer to combine hiking with rock climbing, there is an opportunity to try themselves at Feldberg Mountain. Equipment and guides can also be found at local tourist centers.
Take a note! When going on a trip to Germany, do not forget to take out travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerging medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.
