How to get to Landshut from Munich
I have travelled around Southern Germany a lot and I was absolutely amazed with the combination of natural and historical attractions. The local towns such as Landshut kept their authenticity and can boast great architectural and historical sites. Being charmed with towns of Southern Germany, I have decided to put together information I have previously discovered and create a series of guides on how to organize a holiday in the towns of Bavaria. Based on my research, I found out how to get to the towns, where to stay & what to see. I really hope this detailed information will help you plan your trip to Landshut.
When to travel to Landshut
Landshut is an old town near Munich in Bavaria with a history of almost 800 years. Landshut has preserved many features of the Middle Ages in its town centre, including narrow cobbled streets and monumental Gothic buildings. Besides, the town is surprisingly green, with many park areas and places for strolling around.
A summer is a perfect time to visit Landshut and Bavaria. Blossoming countryside is combined with pleasant weather, which is best for the long-distance walking, hiking and sightseeing. An autumn is also good as the park areas of the town become more colorful and the weather is still warm. It can be a bit rainy in autumn though.
A winter time can boast special holiday vibes with Christmas markets and festive illumination in Landshut. Sometimes it may even snow, so be ready to take warm clothes with you. Of course, you can also warm with mulled wine and local cuisine. Spring comes to Bavaria quite early. The weather is becoming pleasant already in mid-March. Countryside is actively blossoming this time of the year so it is also a good choice to travel to the region.

What to see & do in Landshut
The attractions of Landshut are placed in the historical center and in the town park. Landshut is featured by medieval buildings with typical Gothic elements. Here, a considerable number of architectural monuments of the 14th-15th centuries have been preserved. The main activities in the town are excursions, strolling around the Old Town or cycling in the town park. I would recommend combining active sightseeing with relaxing in the park.
The Old Town of Landshut is full of historical and architectural monuments. Narrow cobbled streets and austere Gothic squares are the main features of the town. An early Gothic element of bright red roofs at low-rise houses can be found here.
The main object of the town center, which attracts the most attention, is the Cathedral of St. Martin, or Martinskirche in German. The church building is decorated with a high narrow tower, which rises above the whole town. The tower is considered to be the tallest building in the old part of Landshut. The cathedral is made in the typical Bavarian style of “brick” Gothic. The height of the tower is more than 130 meters, and the construction of the cathedral lasted almost two centuries.
In addition to St. Martin’s Cathedral, several other religious buildings can be found in the Old Town, including the Church of the Holy Spirit, the Seligental monastery etc. There is also a small Orthodox church of St. Nicholas in Landshut.
One of the main historical attractions of Landshut is located in its park area. It is talking about the Trausnitz fortress. Once the residence of local rulers, the fortress has great architecture and huge sizes at the same time. As it is general in Landshut, the roof of the Trausnitz fortress is painted in red. At the moment, the fortress is a Museum of Fine Arts of the Renaissance period and, of course, is open to tourists. After some research, I found out the following practical information:
- The museum is open from 09.00 to 18.00 in summer and from 10.00 to 16.00 in winter.
- The entrance ticket costs 5.5 euros.
Another interesting architectural object in Landshut is the Dukes’ Residence. Authentic interiors, wall frescoes, painted ceilings, an elegant courtyard and much more have been preserved here. There is some useful information for visiting that I discovered:
- The residence is open for tourists daily from 09.00 to 18.00, except Mondays
- The entrance ticket costs 6 euros
- You can purchase a combined ticket for the Dukes’ Residence + Trausnitz Fortress for 8 euros.
Landshut is no less charming in the pre-Christmas period. While most tourists prefer the holiday fairs in Munich and Nuremberg, Landshut hosts lavish events that anyone can participate in. The Landshut Wedding Festival, which is held in the town once every 4 years, starting from 1475, is also curious. Anyway, to my mind, Landshut is a good choice to learn Bavarian traditions and architecture.
Take a note! When going on a trip to Germany, do not forget to take out a travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerged medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase an insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.
