When to travel to Albenga
Albenga is a resort in the north of Liguria, famous for its historical attractions, which have been preserved here, and for its shoreline which is very popular among tourists who prefer beach holiday. The town center in Albenga is a labyrinth of medieval towers, fortress walls and Gothic structures, which is why Albenga is very popular among travellers as a destination for excursion holidays. But among other things, Albenga is also considered to be a seaside resort; in the summer, the local beaches are quite crowded.
After some research, I decided to put together information I have previously found out and create a complete guide on how to organize a holiday in Albenga. I figured out how to get to the town, where to stay & what to see there. I really hope this detailed information will help you plan your trip to Albenga.
The swimming period in Albenga lasts from June until October when the weather is sunny and warm and the temperature of the sea is suitable for swimming, sunbathing, doing water sports, etc. The period from September until June is perfect for excursion purposes, because the local climate is rather mild this time of the year but not too hot as it used to be in summer.

How to get to Albenga
Where do you fly into to get to Albenga? Albenga is located north of Genoa, between the other major resorts of Alassio and Savona. The most convenient way to get here is from Genoa or Milan, where the international airports are located. In addition, you can visit Albenga from France, because the province of Liguria borders French Provence and the Cote d’Azur regions in the west (Nice airport is the closest one). You can check the current flight timetable to both cities via specialized online services such as Aviasales and other similar ones. I often use this service as it helps me to compare different flight options and to choose the optimal one.

What to see in Albenga
Albenga is considered to be one of the best preserved towns in Northern Italy in terms of historical sites from the period of Middle Ages. Albenga has a rich history and was previously a major port town, which is why the local architectural heritage is one of the most significant on the entire shore. Another unofficial name for Albenga is “the town of a hundred towers”. In the historical center of the town, many towers, fortress walls, cathedrals and churches from the Middle Ages have been preserved.
The historical center of Albenga consists of several squares connected with each other by narrow medieval streets. The hidden gem of the old town is the Cathedral of St. Michael, the construction of which dates back to the early Middle Ages. The exterior of the cathedral is made in the Romanesque style and has not lost its authenticity, while the interiors have been rebuilt more than once and are currently dominated by the Baroque style. The bell tower of the cathedral is made in the late Gothic style. The cathedral houses many interesting works of art. Also, next door to the cathedral is the 5th century baptistery, which is considered to be one of Albenga most valuable attractions. Of interest is the 6th century mosaic that decorates the interior of the baptistery.
In the town center at the intersection of Via Aurelia and St. Michael Square there are 3 medieval towers, which are the main attractions of the Albenga. I did some research and I found out that these buildings are the tallest in the historical part of the town and remind of the former greatness of Albenga.

The entire old town of Albenga is built up with authentic medieval buildings. Once upon a time, the best dynasties of the town lived in some especially magnificent houses. So, walking along the streets of Albenga, you can come across Palazzo Vecchio or Palazzo Costa, which were built like palace houses, or, as we would say now, mansions for the noble families of the towns.
As far as I know, such buildings were especially widespread in Genoa, but in Albenga, as a former large port town, there are also some examples of similar palazzos. Nowadays the buildings house numerous museums in Albenga. Thus, Palazzo Vecchio houses a collection of ancient Roman artifacts, and Palazzo Cepolla is a Ship Museum.
If you are interested in archaeology, then perhaps you will be curious to see with your own eyes the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheater, which date back to the 2-3 centuries BC. These are not the only archaeological areas found on the territory of Albenga. The town begins its history from the prosperity of Ancient Rome.
The beaches of Albenga are considered to be quite good and have a sandy coverage. In my point of view, one of the disadvantages of local beaches is that they are private, i.e. sections of the shore are divided and assigned to individual hotels, so entry to them is paid, but this is compensated by the services which hotels provide and which may be useful during a beach holiday.

Take a note! When going on a trip to Italy, do not forget to take out travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerging medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.
