When to travel to Ludwigsburg
Ludwigsburg is located in the central part of Baden-Wurttemberg region, close to Stuttgart. Ludwigsburg attracts many tourists thanks to a palace and a park preserved here. The Ludwigsburg palace is one of the largest Baroque palaces in Germany. The other great place of interest in the town is the Market Square area, where many architectural monuments from different historical periods are situated. I have travelled in the Baden-Wurttemberg region extensively and I can confirm that local towns kept their authenticity and can boast great architecture, including palaces, castles, cathedrals, etc.
After some research, I can say that it is advisable to visit Ludwigsburg at any time of the year. It may be slightly more picturesque during springs and summers as the palace is surrounded with extensive park area. But the weather is quite mild all year around. In winters the air temperature rarely drops below zero; in springs it`s time to blossom; in summers the weather is warm, but not hot; in autumns you can be especially attracted with colorful nature.

What to see & do in Ludwigsburg
Ludwigsburg is primarily famous for its palaces. These include, in particular, the Ludwigsburg Residence, the Favorit Palace and the Mon Repos Palace, each of which has its own centuries-old history. In addition to the palaces, Ludwigsburg is also remarkable for its Old Town. You can find a lot of religious and architectural monuments on the main square of the town, which is called the Market square.
As a rule, the first look at Ludwigsburg begins with the Ludwigsburg Residence. It is quite convenient that all three palaces are located close to each other. All of them are surrounded by beautiful park areas. By the way, the Ludwigsburg Palace is considered to be one of the largest architectural monuments of this type in all of Europe.
I collected some information and found out that the Ludwigsburg Palace was the residence of the Dukes of the Wurttemberg region. The residence was built at the beginning of the 18th century in the typical Baroque style, and to this day it is considered to be one of the largest Baroque residences in all of Europe.
The residence is currently open for viewing by visitors. Inside, you can see the apartments of one of the Dukes of the Württemberg House, a baroque gallery, as well as a ceramics museum and a fashion museum. After some research, I discovered the following practical information:
- The palace offers guided tours in English and German;
- The palace is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm;
- Please, note, that the museums are closed on Mondays.
The Favorite Palace is a smaller building than the Ludwigsburg residence, but it has very picturesque and romantic views. You may notice, that the palace looks like a huge villa or a country house. It was built after the residence, at the beginning of the 18th century. The Favorit Palace is located in the park, just north of the main palace. The Favorit Palace, like the main palace, is made in the Baroque style.
The palace is open to the public, now it includes a museum, which has been opened after the restoration of the building. Inside the building, the original decoration of the 18th century has been recreated. You can visit the palace separately or with a single ticket, which gives access to all 3 palaces located on the park area. I did some research to collect practical information for visiting and here it is:
- The Favorit palace is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the period of 15 March to 15 November;
- It is only possible to visit it with group tours;
- The entrance fee is 4,50 euros per person.
If the main palace of Ludwigsburg and the Favorite palace are made in the classical Baroque style, then the Mon Repos Palace, which was the country residence of Duke Charles, can already be called an example of the pretentious and intricate Rococo style. The palace is located in the main park area on the shores of the local lake. Its interiors are made in the style of the Napoleonic era. In the summer, outdoor concerts are often held here, as well as fireworks shows during the palace fest. The palace is available only for outside visiting. Be noticed, that the palace is surrounded with the beautiful park area and has a magnificent lake view so, anyway, it is worth of visiting.
Take a note! When going on a trip to Germany, do not forget to take out a travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerged medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase an insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.
