When to travel to Limone sul Garda
The town of Limone sul Garda is a real “pearl” of Lake Garda, located on the Western side of it, away from the beach resorts of the Southern shore. Once a fishing village, now Limone is a pretty picturesque and lovely town to visit. The historical sites preserved here, coupled with stunning natural scenery, make Limone sul Garda a one-of-a-kind Italian town.
Situated along steep mountains, on the very shore of the turquoise waters of the lake, Limone sul Garda is considered to be the birthplace of lemons, at least the locals are firmly convinced of it. That is why you can see bells on houses in the form of lemons; this is a good tradition of locals.
After some research, I decided to put together information I have previously found out and create a complete guide on how to organize a holiday in Limone sul Garda. I figured out how to get to the town, where to stay & what to see there. I really hope this detailed information will help you plan your trip to Limone sul Garda.
To my mind, Limone can be visited at any time of the year, although the “high” tourist season is the period from May to October. Late spring, summertime and the first months of autumn are the best for strolling around and relaxing on the beach because the weather is pretty sunny and warm this time of the year. During the so-called “low” season from mid-October to mid-April the weather may be a bit rainy and cloudy, but there are also fewer tourists and you can explore the area on your own without crowds.

Where do you fly into to get to Limone sul Garda? First you need to fly to one of the major cities nearby; these ones could be Milan, Bergamo, Verona or Venice. You can check the flight timetable to the cities via specialized online services such as Aviasales and other similar ones. How to get to Limone sul Garda from Verona
After some map research, I figured out that the distance between Verona and Limone is about 100 km. You can use public transport or a rented car to get to the town.
By public transport: To get to Limone from Verona by public transport, you need to use a combination of a train + a bus, because there is no train station in Limone. The nearest one is in Desenzano. So, firstly you need to take a train from Verona to Desenzano. Trains run along the route 2-3 times an hour during the day. The travel time is just 20 minutes. You can check the current train timetable and purchase tickets in advance at the Raileurope booking service. I think Raileurope is a very convenient online service with great search options. What to see in Limone sul Garda
Limone sul Garda is a surprisingly picturesque town. Situated between mountains and a lake and surrounded with citrus and olive groves, Limone has stunning natural scenery. The town is great for strolling around, visiting local greenhouses, and exploring historical sights. In addition, Limone has one of the best beach areas on the entire shore of Lake Garda.
If you come to Limone only for excursion purposes, then one day will be enough to explore this small town. However, local beaches, clear blue water and the fresh mountain air often convince tourists to stay here longer. I think it is a pretty picturesque part of Limone, although travellers usually enjoy mostly architectural features.
In the historical center of the town, you can find many magnificent medieval monuments, including the Cathedral of San Benedetto, built in the 17th century; the Church of San Rocca, built in the 16th century; and the Palazzo Casa della Finanza and Palazzo Gepardi, built in the 17th and 18th centuries respectively. The old part of the town consists of narrow cobbled streets, small but elegant squares, and mountains that seem to hang over Limone. If you walk along the residential area and take a closer look, you can find bells in the form of lemons on the houses; this is how local residents express their respect to the town where they live in.

Botanical gardens, or greenhouses as they are also called here, can be found in Limone. They were created back in the 18th century here, and since then their collection of rare exotic plants has only increased. In my opinion, the Limone greenhouses are a great place for walking and an opportunity to learn more about the local climate and nature. Limone is protected from the winds by mountains, so it has a special microclimate that allows traditionally southern crops such as lemons and olives to be grown in Northern Italy.
Among natural sights, I would recommend visiting Sopino waterfall in the Northern part of the town. It is not so full-flowing, but has great panoramic views on Limone and Lake Garda. In the summer, a popular entertainment for holidaymakers in Limone sul Garda are boat trips around Lake Garda. For example, from Limone you can get to the town of Malcesine, which is located on the opposite side, and which has great architecture. All excursion routes on Lake Garda can be found on the carrier official website and I can definitely recommend this useful online planner for boat trips on Lake Garda.
As for beach life, there are some lovely beaches on the shore in Limone. You can choose among Central Limone beach with turquoise water and stone platforms to dive; Cola beach with gentle entrance to the lake and small pebbles cover; Pubblica beach with opportunities for water sport activities and areas for beach volleyball. There is a kitesurfing school near here as well.
I should also mention that Limone has a great walking promenade along the shore with breathtaking views on the lake. It looks like a wooden bridge overlooking Lake Garda. As you see, there are a lot of opportunities for strolling around and enjoying natural landscapes. In my point of view, Limone is also good for beach relaxing, tasting local cuisine, exploring medieval architecture; that is why Limone is called one of the most beautiful towns of Lake Garda.

Take a note! When going on a trip to Italy, do not forget to take out travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerging medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.
