When to travel to Hintertux
Hintertux is the only resort in Austria with direct access to the glacier. Skiing at the resort is possible all year round. Next door to Hintertux is the famous resort of Mayrhofen, however, if you want real extreme adventures, great snow slopes, a vast freeride area and, finally, glacier skiing, then Hintertux is for you.
After some research, I decided to put together information I have previously found out and create a complete guide on how to organize a holiday in Hintertux. I figured out how to get to the town, where to stay & what to do there. I really hope this detailed information will help you plan your trip to Hintertux.
As it has been said before, Hintertux is an all-year-round resort. You can go skiing even in summer as there is a glacier available for it. The main skiing season lasts from November until April. During the period of May-October you can try hiking, rock climbing, tennis and other summer sports.

How to get to Hintertux
Where do you fly into to get to Hintertux? The nearest major cities with international airports are Innsbruck (86 km), Salzburg (200 km) and Munich (175 km). You can check the current flight timetable from your city at Aviasales booking service. I often use this service as it helps me to compare different flight options and to choose an optimal one. It is not possible to get to Hintertux by public transport without making changes; you need to use a train + bus combination. You can also use a taxi service, a private car transfer, or rent a car. In all three cities – Innsbruck, Salzburg, and Munich – you can find a lot of rental offices at the airports upon arrival.
How to get to Hintertux from Innsbruck
By public transport: From Innsbruck, you first need to take the train to Mayrhofen with a short change in the town of Jenbach, and then take the Green Line Bus. You can check the train schedule to Mayrhofen and purchase tickets at the Raileurope ticket service. I use this service when planning my trips in Europe in advance. It helps me to sort various available options by the duration of the trip, departure and arrival points, price, etc.
In general, trains run 1-2 times per hour throughout the day; the travel time to Mayrhofen is about 1 hour 40 minutes. I also found out that buses from Mayrhofen Train Station depart to Hintertux twice an hour throughout the day; the travel time is 30 minutes. You should take bus #4104.
By transfer service: The option of transfers is very convenient, especially if you have a large amount of luggage or sports equipment with you. In this case, you can take a taxi to your destination at Innsbruck Airport or order an individual car transfer in advance. The service is more expensive, but also much more comfortable. In the case of a transfer, a driver with a nameplate will be waiting for you upon arrival. You can order a taxi at the information desk at the arrival airport, or you can book transfer services in advance via specialized online services, for example, Kiwitaxi and others similar. I read the reviews of the services and most of them are positive. The total travel time by taxi is 1 hour 20 minutes.
By rented car: Another suitable option is renting a car. To rent a car you need to have a passport, an international driver’s license and a bank card. You can book a car in advance on specialized services such as Discover Cars, Economybookings and other similar ones. Based on my experience, both services are good. They have decent search and a lot of filters to narrow the results as you may wish. Innsbruck and Hintertux are connected with highways No. A12, Zillertal Strasse and B169; the travel time is approximately 1,5 hours (see on the map).

How to get to Hintertux from Salzburg
Salzburg is located slightly further from Hintertux than Innsbruck, but you can also get there using public transport, taxi (transfer) or renting a car.
By public transport: If you choose public transport, then the option is the same as in the case of Innsbruck: you need to use a train + bus combination. From Salzburg you first need to take a train to Mayrhofen with a change in Jenbach. The total travel time is approx. 2,5 hours. The trains run once every two hours during the day. You can check the train schedule to Mayrhofen and purchase tickets at the Raileurope ticket service. In my point of view, Raileurope has a solid search with numerous filters which help to sort the results by duration of a trip, departure and arrival points, number of changes, price, etc. Then, in Mayrhofen, a regular bus to Hintertux departs directly from the Railway Station twice an hour; the journey time is 30 minutes. Based on my research, tourists should take bus #4104.
By transfer service: An individual car transfer option is also available. This option is convenient because it does not require changes and you can transport your ski equipment and a larger amount of luggage. In addition, the transfer service is available at any time of the day. Please, pay attention, that transfer services must be ordered in advance. Kiwitaxi, Intui.Travel and other similar transfer cars run along the route. I examined a lot of reviews of Kiwitaxi and Intui.Travel and I can say that most of them are positive. The total travel time from the airport to the resort is 2 hours 25 minutes.
By rented car: You can also rent a car to reach your travel destination. To rent a car you need to have a passport, an international driver’s license and a bank card. You can book a car in advance on specialized services such as Discover Cars, Economybookings and other similar ones. I personally use both online services to compare available options and choose the best suitable for me. Salzburg and Hintertux are connected with highway No. A8, the travel time is 2,5 hours (see on the map).

By public transport: To get to Hintertux from Munich by public transport, you need to combine a train and a regular bus. At the Munich Train Station you need to take the train to Mayrhofen with a change in Jenbach. The travel time takes about 2,5 hours. The trains run once every two hours during the day. Then at the Mayrhofen Railway Station you need to take a regular bus No. 4104 to Hintertux; the journey time is approx. half an hour.

There are various services for this, such as Kiwitaxi, Intui.Travel and other similar transfer cars run along the route. Based on my research, both services have a lot of positive reviews. What to do in Hintertux
Hintertux is a unique ski resort in Austria, which provides opportunities for glacier skiing all year round. There is some useful information for visiting that I discovered:
- The highest point of the glacier is 3250 m.
- The total length of the trails is 60 km; in summer 18 km of trails are open.
- Trails for beginners are about 14 km, trails of average difficulty are 35 km, difficult trails are about 11 km.
- The resort is served with 32 ski lifts.
- The resort area also has halfpipes, a fun park, cross-country ski trails (about 30 km), toboggan run.
- Hiking trails are also available (a total of about 70 km).
The resort is located in the Ziller Valley, one of the snowiest places in Austria, so the ski season here lasts quite a long time – from November to May. Also, some of the trails are available for skiing in the summer, since there is a non-melting glacier at the top of the mountain resort. Hintertux is the first year-round ski area in the Tyrol region.
We cannot fail to mention the Betterpark fan park in Hintertux. There are three lines of obstacles, each more than 700 meters long. The park is crowned by a 100-meter-long superpipe. The cost of ski passes in the Ziller Valley varies depending on the length of stay.
An active life during the day can be mixed with visiting restaurants or nightclubs during the evening time. The restaurants predominantly serve Austrian and German cuisine. You can also relax in the wellness center with swimming pools, bowling and tennis. In addition to skiing, in Hintertux you can try tobogganing, ice skating, snowshoeing, and visiting ice caves, which are considered to be local attractions.
At your leisure time, you can also visit the neighboring resort of Mayrhofen, which is noisier and offers a lot of entertainment – from shopping to visiting the local aquatic center with a swimming pool equipped with slides. Buses run between Hintertux and Mayrhofen, and taxis are also easy to find. As I see it, both Mayrhofen and Hintertux deserve tourist attention as the towns are full of attractions and can offer a lot of things to do.

Take a note! When going on a trip to Austria, do not forget to take out travel insurance, which is useful for receiving a tourist visa and for solving emerging medical problems when travelling in another country. You can purchase insurance via online services, for example, via EKTA and others. You can choose from different modes, including quiet, active or extreme rest.

We usually fly into Munich when visiting this area, since we can get a direct flight from the US). I need to look a bit more into flying to Innsbruck, as it makes the logistics of getting there so much easier.
Very nice detailed guide on getting to these great places in Austria! I prefer public transport for long distance, and found it very detailed!
